Read the notice below and answer the questions that follow.
The Gawai Festival is celebrated by the Dayaks in Sarawak. It falls on the beginning of June each year
after the paddy harvest. It is known as Gawai Day or Gawai Dayak. The word Gawai means festival festival
while Dayak refers to the native races in Sarawak.
On the day of the celebration, the Dayaks gather in their ancestral longhouses early in the morning. The
ceremony begins with the headman offering thanksgiving prayers to God for the good paddy harvest. He also
asks for blessings and protection for the paddy storeroom so that it will be safe from rats,floods, fires and thefts.
After offering prayers, the festing begins. The villagers eat rice cooked in bamboo and drink a strong rice
wine called tuak. During the feast, the young men and women will perform the traditional Ngajat dance. The
feasting, dancing and merry-making usually go on until sunset.
