However, I have kept abreast of some of the changes taking place in math education. Though I feel extremely confident in the content area, I am not familiar with a few of the strategies used by some of the math programs today. In addition, I feel that I need information and some training in problem solving strategies and portfolio assessment. Step Two – Develop Goals. Use the SMART goal format (see pages 20 – 21 of the Handbook) Specific: I will increase my knowledge and skills in using instructional techniques to teach math problem solving by seeking professional development in that area. In addition, I will increase my knowledge about math portfolio assessment and how problem solving strategies are related. Measurable: I will volunteer to sit in on my local district math portfolio training meetings and compare my scoring results with the teachers’ results Attainable: An eighth grade math teacher in my son’s school has agreed to mentor me. I have agreed to volunteer in his math classroom one morning a week for the next year. He will also let me borrow texts so I can compare/contrast current math programs. Relevant: Increasing students’ abilities to problem solve is an important part of our local, state and national dialogue about educational achievement. Time-Bound: I hope to achieve this goal within four years, since I plan to go back into the classroom at that time and I need to be current in my math pedagogy. During the past six years I have been at home with my young children. However, I have kept abreast of
some of the changes taking place in math education. Though I feel extremely confident in the content
