and will become a new economic growth engine for the ASEANChina Free

"One of our main tasks during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) is to
accelerate the construction of a high-speed railway from Nanning to ASEAN
countries such as Singapore to establish an international passage, bolstering

EastWest Economic Corridor (EWC)3
The EastWest Economic corridor is an economic development program
initiated in order to promote development and integration of four Southeast
Asian countries, namely: Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The concept
was agreed upon in 1998 at the Ministerial Conference of the Greater
Mekong Subregion, organized in Manila, the Philippines. This corridor became
operational on December 12, 2006.
The East-West Corridor (EWC) is not considered an important corridor from a
trade logistics perspective, except at the western end linking Thailand with
Myanmar. Current trade has been restricted by sanctions and difficult
economic conditions in Myanmar , and by complex logistics involving the
significant use of non-transparent approaches. The damage to the bridge
between Mae Sot and Myawaddy resulted in the imposition of a 12-ton
weight limit, thus excluding heavy transport crossing. Most traffic passes
through the 25 river ports and/or quays and is reloaded onto local transport
for distribution within Myanmar.

Maharashtra and passes through major cities such as Chitradurga, HubballiDharwad, Belagavi, Solapur, Sangli, Pune and Mumbai. The main purpose of
this corridor is to link small industrial area to the major cities.

"This road will not boost our defenses but help connect far flung communities
for economic development denied to them for so long," says India's junior
home minister Khiren Rijiju, himself a resident of Arunachal Pradesh.
