PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1
CONCRETE MATERIALS
A. Concrete Materials:
1. Cement: ASTM C150, Type II - Moderate Portland type; gray color.
a. Cement having a temperature exceeding 160 F (71 C) at the time of delivery to the
mixer shall not be used in the concrete.
2. Coarse Aggregate:
a. Coarse aggregate shall be broken stone, gravel, or reclaimed concrete aggregate defined
as mortar-coated rock, consisting of clean durable fragments of uniform quality
throughout.
b. It shall be free from soft, disintegrated pieces, mud, dirt, organic or other injurious
material and shall not contain more than one percent of dust by mass, as determined by
the testing method used by the Laboratory.
c. Coarse aggregate of a size retained on a 1-inch (25 mm) square opening sieve shall not
contain more than 8% of flat or elongated pieces, whose longest dimension exceeds five
times their maximum thickness.
d. Soundness: When tested with magnesium sulfate solution for soundness, using
AASHTO Method T 104, coarse aggregate shall not have a loss of more than 10% at
the end of five cycles.
e. Loss on Abrasion: When tested by means of the Los Angeles Machine, using AASHTO
Method T 96, coarse aggregate shall not have a loss of more than 40%.

Grading: The mix shall be designed utilizing a nominal maximum size of No. 6
aggregate, in accordance with the gradation table in Section M.01.01 of the CT-DOT
Form 816.

Chloride Content: When reclaimed concrete aggregate is used, it shall be tested for
chloride content prior to being mixed with virgin aggregate. The test used to determine
chloride content shall be that outlined in the FHWA Report No. FHWA-RD-77-85. No
aggregate will be accepted if the chloride content as determined from this test exceeds
0.5 pound/cubic yard.
Fine Aggregate:
a. Fine aggregate shall be sand consisting of clean, hard, durable, uncoated particles of
quartz or other rock, free from lumps of clay, soft or flaky material, loam, organic or
other injurious material.
b. In no case shall sand containing lumps of frozen material be used.
c. Fine Materials: Fine aggregate shall contain not more than 3% of material finer than a
#200 (75 m) sieve, using AASHTO T 11.
d. Organic Impurities: Fine aggregate subjected to the colorimetric test shall not produce a
color darker than Gardner Color Standard No. 11, using AASHTO T 21. If the fine
aggregate fails to meet this requirement, the provisions of AASHTO M 6, Section 5.2,
will govern.
e. Grading: Fine aggregate shall be uniformly graded from coarse to fine and shall meet

The above gradation represents the extreme limits which shall determine suitability for use
from all sources of supply. The gradation from any one source shall be reasonably uniform
and not subject to the extreme percentages of gradation specified above. For the purpose of
determining the degree of uniformity, a fineness modulus determination will be made upon
representative samples from any source. Fine aggregate from any one source having a
variation in fineness modulus greater than 0.20 either way from the fineness modulus of the
representative sample will be rejected.
Water: ASTM C94/C94M; potable.
Air Entrainment: ASTM C260.
Chemical Admixture: ASTM C494/C494M.
a. Type A - Water Reducing.
b. Type B - Retarding.
c. Type C - Accelerating.
d. Type D - Water Reducing and Retarding.
e. Type E - Water Reducing and Accelerating.
f. Type F - Water Reducing, High Range.
g. Type G - Water Reducing, High Range and Retarding.
Fly Ash: Use AASHTO M 295Class C or Class F.
a. Fly ash may be used to replace up to a maximum of 15% of the required portland
cement. The fly ash shall be substituted on a weight basis, with a minimum of 1 pound
of fly ash for 1 pound of portland cement.
b. Loss on Ignition for either class of fly ash shall not exceed 4.0%.
c. Before starting work, the Contractor shall notify the Engineer, in writing, of the class,
the name and location of the producing plant and the name and location of the bulk
storage facilities, if different from the producing plant, for the fly ash he proposes to use
in the work. Different classes of fly ash or the same class from different producing
plants, shall not be used on any project without the written express approval of the
Engineer. Fly ash shall be obtained from an approved source and shall be supplied from
silos or bulk storage facilities, whose contents have been approved by the Engineer.
d. Fly ash shall be sampled and tested in accordance with the procedures and methods
prescribed in ASTM C 311 and consistent with the requirements of CT-DOT Form 816,
Section M.03.01 13.(a).

Water: ACI 318; clean, potable, not detrimental to concrete, and without deleterious amounts of
chloride ions.
ADMIXTURES
A. Furnish materials in accordance with municipality and CT DOT Form 816.
B.
All admixtures shall be from one manufacturer or else the Ready Mix Concrete Producer shall
certify compatibility.

Admixtures: Include admixture types and quantities indicated in concrete mix designs only when
approved by the Engineer.
1. Use accelerating admixtures in cold weather only if approved by the Engineer. Use of
admixtures will not relax cold weather placement requirements.
2. Do not use calcium chloride nor admixtures containing calcium chloride.
3. Use set retarding admixtures during hot weather only if approved by the Engineer.
4. Add air entrainment admixture to concrete mix for work exposed to freezing and thawing.
Ready Mixed Concrete: Mix and deliver concrete in accordance with ASTM C94/C94M.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1
EXAMINATION
A. Verify requirements for concrete cover over reinforcement.
B.
3.2
Verify anchors, seats, plates, pipes, reinforcement and other items to be cast into concrete are
accurately placed, positioned securely, and will not interfere with placing concrete.
PREPARATION
A. Prepare existing and/or previously place concrete by cleaning with steel brush and applying
bonding agent in accordance with manufacturer's instructions
B.
In locations where new concrete is doweled to existing work, drill holes in existing concrete,
insert steel dowels and pack solid with non-shrink grout.
C.
Remove debris and ice from formwork, reinforcement, and concrete substrates.
FORMING
A. Forms are to made of standard steel construction of if necessary 2x6 wood, straight, free from
warp and of sufficient strength to resist springing from the pressure of the concrete. The forms

shall be securely staked, braced and held firm to the line and grade and shall be tight to prevent
leakage.

All forms shall be cleaned and oiled each time they are used for a pour.
PLACING CONCRETE
A. Notify Owner minimum 24 hours prior to commencement of operations.
B.

The reinforced concrete container pads shall have construction joints with spacing at least every
20 feet. Construction joints shall be cut in newly poured concrete within 48 hours.
D. Ensure reinforcement, embedded parts, and formed joint fillers, are not disturbed during concrete
placement.

Place concrete in continuous operation for each panel or section determined by predetermined
joints.
G. Maintain records of concrete placement. Record date, location, quantity, air temperature, and test
samples taken.
H. Place concrete continuously between predetermined expansion, control, and construction joints.
I.
J.
K. Place joint filler in slabs as indicated on Drawings. Set top to required elevations. Secure to resist
movement by wet concrete.
L.
Extend joint filler from bottom of slab to within 1/8inch of finished slab surface.
M. Screed slabs-on-grade level, maintaining surface flatness of maximum 1/4 inch in 10 ft.
3.5
EXPANSION JOINTS
A. Expansion joints shall be placed every 15 from the beginning and end of every pour (or as
directed by the engineer) and where 5 deep concrete meets 8 deep concrete. Expansion joint
material must be x 5. Two 5/8 x 24 long smooth steel rods are to be used at every
expansion joint.
B.
Expansion joints are to be placed in the forms before concrete is poured. Joints must not be
pushed through wet cement. The steels rods are to be asphalt dipped or foil cover at both endes
through expansion joints. This whole assembly is to be placed in forms before pour.

CONCRETE FINISHING
A. Finish and repair concrete surfaces in accordance with ACI 301, unless otherwise specified.

B.
Defects:
1. Repair formed surfaces by removing minor honeycombs, pits greater than 1 square inch
surface area or 0.25 inch maximum depth, or otherwise defective areas.
2. Provide edges perpendicular to the surface and patch with nonshrink grout.
3. Patch tie holes and defects when the forms are removed.
4. Concrete with extensive honeycomb (including exposed steel reinforcement, cold joints,
entrapped debris, separated aggregate, or other defects) which affect the serviceability or
structural strength will be rejected, unless correction of defects is approved.
5. Obtain approval of corrective action prior to repair.
6. The surface of the concrete shall not vary more than the allowable tolerances of ACI 301.
7. Exposed surfaces shall be uniform in appearance and finished to a smooth form finish,
unless otherwise specified
C.
Floated Finish:
1. Place, consolidate, and immediately strike off concrete to obtain proper contour, grade, and
elevation before bleedwater appears.
2. Permit concrete to attain a set sufficient for floating and supporting the weight of the
finisher and equipment.
3. If bleedwater is present prior to floating the surface, drag the excess water off or remove by
absorption with porous materials. Do not use dry cement to absorb bleedwater.
4. Surface shall be level to within 1/4 inch in 10 feet where floor drains are not provided.
5. Tooled joints (depth 1-1/2 for 5, 2 for 8) shall be formed every five (5) feet with a
jointing tool. A jointer shall be used to form a rounded edge not exceeding radius at all
surface edges.
Maintain concrete with minimal moisture loss at relatively constant temperature for period
necessary for hydration of cement and hardening of concrete.
C.
Apply a curing compound compatible with the specified use as instructed by the Engineer.
D. Cure concrete in accordance with ACI 308.1. No curing compounds will be allowed.
3.8
PROTECTIVE SEALANT
A. Apply protective sealant, Consolideck Saltguard WB or approved equal to all surfaces of new
concrete. All work shall be in conformance with the manufactures recommendations and to the
satisfaction of the Engineer.

C.
Field Testing:
1. Slump Test Method: ASTM C143/C143M.
2. Air Content Test Method: ASTM C173/C173M
3. Temperature Test Method: ASTM C1064/C1064M.
4. Measure slump and temperature for each compressive strength concrete sample plus
additional slump tests as required by the Engineer.
5. Measure air content in air entrained concrete for each compressive strength concrete sample.
D. A certificate shall be furnished from the supplier for each batch of concrete that is supplied,
certifying that the concrete complies with the approved design mix.
E.
Results of all field testing and inspection shall be submitted to the Engineer for review.
F.
Maintain records of concrete placement. Record date, location, quantity, air temperature and test
samples taken.
3.10 PATCHING
A. Allow Engineer to inspect concrete surfaces immediately upon removal of forms.
B.
Excessive honeycomb or embedded debris in concrete is not acceptable. Notify Engineer upon
discovery.
C.
Patch imperfections at no cost to Owner and as directed by Engineer, in accordance with ACI
301.
C.
Do not patch, fill, touch-up, repair, or replace exposed concrete except upon express direction of
Engineer for each individual area.
