Lets have a look at few things that sets the two educational systems apart:

First and foremost, as everyone knows Indian education system follows a theory based curriculum. Students
are required to memorize facts and knowledge written in textbooks. In a way, Indian education system is still
very much focusing on bookish knowledge instead of preparing students for future careers and jobs.
Whereas, western education system stresses on educational flexibility, creativity and childs interest. Western
educational institutes treats imparting education as a learning process and believes in imparting practical
knowledge to ready students for future.

Secondly, Indian educational system, unfortunately, has not changed much even after independence and is
still following same set of obsolete rules when it comes to education as it was some 150 years ago.
On the other hand, in the west, education system is changed as per needs and requirements of the present day
world. Western education system is more liberal refined and advanced in its approach to teach children.

Thirdly, in Indian as aforementioned stress is more on gaining bookish knowledge, hence extra-curriculum
activities are neglected or ignored in almost every school. Even parents hardly ever bother about their childs
interest or aspirations and give more importance to finding a tutor than to let child engage in extra-curriculum
activities.
While in the west, extra-curriculum activities are given as much importance as studies by both school authorities
and parents. Children are encouraged to take part in athletic or other extra-curriculum activities, so they can
choose what they want to be when they grow up.

Fourthly, it wont be wrong to say that Indian educational system is somewhat harsh on children and favors
only those who can memorize things easily. Since performance is the basic criteria, non-performers are
ostracized by peers, parents and society as large in India, resulting in poor self-esteem in kids.
However, since western education system is more liberal in its approach to teach, children from early ages are
taught to express themselves and their interests. Western education system is built in such a manner, so that
every child at least graduates from high school.

Lastly, one cannot ignore the fact that Indian education systems structured approach towards studies
(especially mathematics from early on) has managed to produce so many world class software engineers. It
might still be finding its way towards the top, yet India is doing everything it can to improve its education
system.
