Symbology and related

Symbology is the process of viewing data based on different categories in order to present result
in the most effective manner. There are five main ways for symbology:
1) Feature
a. Single symbol, simple easy to use and has many options
2) Categories
a. Unique value, best when data can be presented based on unique value. Example
city name. Symbol may be change manually and save as a layer for future use.
b. Unique value many fields, this would be helpful in some cases where there are
more than one unique value associated with practical application. Example states
and population
c. Match to a symbol in style, this is for matching special symbol, not very particular
for general applications
3) Quantities for fields that are numerical in nature (Area, population...)
a. Graduate color, the color would increase in darkness as the value increases.
Example as the elevation increase the value gets darker or lighter. There are 7
methods for classifications:
i. Manual (user define interval and classes)
ii. Equal interval (the system divide data based on the user input number of
classes
iii. Define interval (user define the interval)
iv. Quintile, it insure evenly distributed
v. Natural breaks (Jenks), the default method, it computed the breaks in the
data and choose both interval and classes
vi. Geometric Interval

vii. Standard Deviation, divide based on the standard deviation in the data
b. Graduate symbol, the symbol increase in size as the value increase
c. proportional symbol
d. Dot density
4) Charts
a. Bar
b. columns
c. stacked
5) multiple attribute
a. Quantizes by categories

Perform the following using updated Canada database; prepare a PDF and mxd
file as needed. Make sure that all maps have the north arrow, scale, title legend,
and spatial referencing and proper labeling.
Select the feature and change symbology
1)

Use single symbol for the airport and major roads features to change proper
symbol for airports and roads types.

2)

Use Categories classification, to create a map that shows expressway and

international airport only. Show road Label in the best possible direction.

3)

Join the provinces and population table based on PROV. filed Perform
population and dwelling normalization based on area of each state. Change
number of classes and method to obtain the best possible presentation to either
one.

4)

Use quantities 4 option s to create the best possible presentation of dwelling

per state.

5)

Use chart pie and bar chart for dwelling and area.

6)

Use the elevation layer uses all the unique value and or class field to create the
best map to present elevation difference s of no more than 500 meters.

7)

Use stretched options to create the best possible hillside effect map for Canada.
