Process Flow Diagram

A process flow diagram (PFD) is a diagram commonly used in chemical and process engineering to indicate the general flow of plant processes and equipment. PFDs typically include process piping, major equipment items, control valves, connections with other systems, and major bypass and recirculation streams. PFDs generally do not include minor details like piping or instrumentation. PFDs can depict single unit processes or multiple process units within a large industrial plant at different levels of detail.

A process ow diagram (PFD) is a diagram commonly

term for a PFD is a owsheet.
Process ow diagrams generally do not include:

Minor bypass lines
Isolation and shuto valves
Maintenance vents and drains
Relief and safety valves
Flanges
Process ow diagrams of multiple process units within a
large industrial plant will usually contain less detail and
may be called block ow diagrams or schematic ow diagrams.
