Installation instructions for the MS-Sensor

Installation instructions for MS-wheel and pick-up

1.

find a place to mount the wheel.

Criteria for the best possible place of installation:
- as close as possible to the flywheel (under no circumstances after any
flexible couplings!)
- take care of the risk of injury by rotating parts!
- Enough space available for installation work
- Possibility to mount the pick-up and holder mostly vibration-free
available
- A possibility to pull the cable up
to the cylinder station must be
available

2.

Clean the propeller shaft properly in

the installation area (also remove
paint and hard dirt)

3.

Put the sensor slices around the

shaft (use cable ties for provisional
fixation)
Put in the tensing-screws (clock- and
anti-clockwise thread) and fix by
approx. one revolution.
If all four tensioning screws are
inserted tighten them until the wheel
can only hardly be moved by hand
on the shaft.
Take care that all sockets stand
straight on the shaft.

4.

Put the M6 screws (inside scope of supply) through the holders at the
connections but dont tighten them.

5.

Put the small brass-made installation helps in the INC gaps at the overlay
part of the segments to ensure proper roundness.
If the shaft diameter variation is too high you maybe have to loosen all M6
screws. (Loosen only so far that the wheel can be justified with slight hits
from a plastic hammer.)

6.

Pull all M6 screws tight.

7.

Turn the engine to cylinder #1 TDC (Top Death Center)

8.

remove the brass-made installation helps!

9.

Mount the universal holder for the pick-up.

10.

Mount the MS-pick-up.

Install the pick-up in a way that the wheel
is centered inside the opening of the pickup and the white marks on the pick-up
box point on the gaps of the sensor
wheel. Turn the sensor wheel on the shaft
by hand for bringing also the TDC-gap
into the pick-up.
Secure the screws of the pick-up with
blue Loctite!

11.

Use the shorter one of the two silver

cables in the Premet suitcase to connect
the pick-up with the PREMET.
Switch on the PREMET, both LEDs of the
pick-up should now be lighting. If not,
adjust the MS-wheel by hand until both
are lighting.

12.

Check the horizontal and vertical

deviation of the wheel while slow-turning
the engine with a dial gauge. The
deviation should be:
Less than 1,0mm axial run-out
deviation
Less than 0,5mm radial run-out
deviation
If necessary adjust the wheel by knocking
carefully against the steel belt with a
rubber-hammer.

13.

Tighten all tensioning and holding screws, so that the adjustment of the
wheel can not be changed by hand any more.

14.

Select the item CHECK TDC SENSOR in the PREMET main menu and
choose the option COUNT INC PULSE. Now slow-turn the engine and
check if 360 pulses where counted. If not, check the wheel for dirt, grease
or anything else that could block the laser beam inside the pick-up, remove
the dirt an start the test again.

15.

Pull the long silver cable with the connection box up to the cylinder station
and mount the connection box at a place not more than 10m away from
any indicator cock. (Please see also instruction Installation instruction for
MS-cable)

16.

Connect the PREMET to the connection box using the short silver cable
and repeat the test in step 14.

ENTER

The instrument asks if the MS-sensor is installed

Use the symbols up and down to choose YES or NO.
Enter YES

After you have chosen YES the following display appears:

CHECK TDC SENSOR

Count INC Pulses

- running engine
- slow turning the gear
- to count the pulse signals by slow turning the gear

In order to check the MS-wheel sensor choose Count INC pulses and push ENTER.
Turn the engine slowly 1 rotation starting from the TDC position and ending again in
the same TDC -position.
The sensor should now record 360 pulses per one rotation.
CHECK TDC SENSOR
INC : XXX pulses
ESC

ENTER

- In some cases the counted amount of signals is more

or less than 360
- push ENTER to leave the menu

In this instance, please check if any or some of the slots are not recordable (for
