Competition Rules Final
General
Registration deadline is Sunday, May 30th, 2010
Anyone under the age of 20 may participate
Participants should arrive by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday June 5th at Gurdwara Gur Nanak Parkash to check in.
Failure to follow any of the rules below may result in disqualification.
Participants will be divided into the following age groups for all categories except Group Kirtan.
0-5
6-8
9-11
12-15
16-20
Kirtan (Individual)
No instrument other than the vaaja and the tabla may accompany the participant
Time limit is 5 minutes maximum. 30 second grace period will be given.
Participants will be judged on: Taal, Pronunciation, Sur, Presentation, and Gurmat etiquette.
Points will be deducted for overtime.
Kirtan (Group)
Participants will be divided into the following age groups:
0-10
11-15
16-20
Each member of the group must be from the same age group.
Group must have a minimum of 3 members and a maximum of 10 members.
Only one group per age group may participate from any one Gurdwara, Sikh Institution or organization
Time limit is 10 min. 30 sec. grace period will be given.
Groups are encouraged to be creative and use instruments other than the vaaja and the tabla. (For example, if a member knows how to play
the sitar, violin, flute etc. he/she is encouraged to play it.).
Each group must bring their own Tabla player, be it from the group or professional.
No participant may take part in more than one group, except a Tabla player. Failure to follow this rule will be a cause for disqualification.
Groups will be judged on: Sargam, Taal, Pronunciation, Vocals, Presentation, Group Dynamics, Harmony and Creativity.
Points will be deducted for overtime.
Tabla Competition
No instrument (for example a vaaja) may accompany the tabla player during competition.
Time limit is 8 minutes maximum. 30 sec. grace period will be given.
Participants will be judged on: number of taals, clarity, and number of tores, presentation, and gurmat etiquette.
Points will be deducted for overtime.
Dastarbandi
Participants will be judged on: neatness, the time taken to tie the dastar and the respect given to the dastar (for example not letting it touch
the floor, not putting it into your mouth etc.)
Gurbani
Participants will be judged on: the number of banis/how much bani memorized, pronunciation, and gurmat etiquette.
Gatka
Participant will be judged on overall presentation, panthra, and gurmat etiquette.
Each participant will be given 4 minutes maximum to perform their chosen steps.
Each participant wanting to use a shastar may bring their own, but shastars will be provided if needed.
Speech
Speech and kavita are two separate competitions. You can only participate in one or the other. If you are participating in the speech
competition, you may not participate in the kavita competition. If you are participating in the kavita competition, you may not participate
in the speech competition.
Participants must present a speech on the topic assigned to their age group.
Topics
0-4: What have you learned about Sikhi so far? (Paath, gatka etc.)
5-8: Gurus (their history, philosophy, travels, etc.)
9-11: Sikh Sakhis: what is your favorite sakhi and what lesson does it teach you?)
12-15: How were the times during 1984? ( How were Sikhs treated [children elderly, men, and women])
16-20: Life story of Sant Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale / A Karkoo Singh / or describe a event that
happened.
Time limit is 6 minutes maximum. 30 sec. grace period.
Participants will be judged on subject matter, clarity, facial expression, body language, knowledge of material, presentation and gurmat
etiquette. Speech may be in Punjabi or English.
Kavita
Time limit is 6 minutes maximum. 30 sec. grace period.
Participants will be judged on clarity, facial expression, body language, presentation and gurmat etiquette.
