Question 1
Scene 2, Act 1
This scene begins with the introduction of the main character, here we see her wearing
jeans, a top and a hoodie; this suggest to the audience that the main character is fairly
ordinary. If we look at the opening sequence to Saw, although it is far more intense as we
see that their clothes are covered in blood, the overall attire connotes that before
entering this situation, they lived ordinary lives. Seen through the plain dress shirt and [].
Main characters are often set out to relate to the viewer, often through a character's
interests and appearance. Although within the typical horror films, the hero/main is
usually a male character with a strong masculine build; these characters tend to show
little emotion but a strong force of determination. Rosalie is somewhat a counter typical
character in this scene because, of her gender, as well as her strong drive of
determination in contrast to a typical female role of a character who is often the weakest.
In comparison with the female in Silent Hill, who seems to be taken over with emotions,
Rosalie gives the viewers a calmer start to the production. Continuing we see the
introduction to a new character, the unfocused wide shot here illustrates her isolation
and vulnerability.
Darkness and dramatic shadow are often used to elicit suspense, like
when we hear something and cant see what it is, or catch a glimpse of something
moving in the background but cant quite make it out. The sense of blindness increases
tension. Its creepy to hear something and not know where its coming from. It works well
here because it is in a daytime setting, so its more unexpected, playing to our false sense
of security.
The introduction to a doll like character connotes innocence becoming
corrupted or lost, and the underdeveloped brain of a child becomes primal force of evil,
dolls have become one of the go to typical horror characters to use, most recent
successful one is Annabelle
Scene 2, Act 2
This scene begins with a slow motion of the main character.
The technique highlights
physical movements facilitating the audience to concentrate on such things as the
underlying horror of an action, the non diegetic sound of a slow paced heartbeat
intensifies this scene, and suggests to the audience that something is about to happen.
The heartbeat represents Rosalies heartbeat and tells the audience that she has come in
contact with something she is fearing.
We then get some diegetic dialogue from both
Rosalie and another new character,
the close-up shot here is used to create atmosphere
and increase the audiences fear by zooming in on facial expressions of the characters at
hand.
Scene 2, Act 3
This short final scene we see Rosalie walking into darkness, this could illustrate to the
viewer that Rosalie is entering somewhere that contains an evil presence. Theres then a
fade to black into a black screen, where we hear the small girl from the beginning of the
production calling for the main character.
