ENGLISH (81-120)
Directions (Q. 81-90): Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it
Certain words/phrases are given in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.
In response to the first signs of decay, a group of journalists decided to form a discussion group that would
keep them sharp, help them exchange ideas and share information. One of the subjects suggested by a junior
assistant editor, a male junior assistant editor one must add, was the increasing feminization of the
newsroom. For one reason or another, the discussion group met only once and never got around to talking
about the number of women in the newsroom. But when word got around that this might be a topic for
debate, many of the men in the newsroom buttonholed me and asked if I might represent their views. Here I
am relying on memory but the main concerns expressed were:
The softening of the news. Women were being hired so as to represent concerns that were not those worthy
of a newspaper.
The weakening of moral fibre. Women were a distraction to male reporters who seemed to be spending
more time trying to flirt than doing their jobs.
The preferential treatment that made it difficult for men to see women as equal colleagues.
The first two are so patently ridiculous that I will ignore them. What has been considered all the news
thats fit to print or what has been considered the news with which the leader guards the reader has
changed
From era to era, from nation to state to city to town, from editor to editor, from imagined readership to
imagined readership. As far as weakening of the moral fibre goes, this is the same argument that requires
women to be wrapped up, literally and metaphorically, for their own good. The third argument at least dealt
with on-ground problems. What happens on the night shift? To what areas of the city would an editor (male
or female)be willing to send an unescorted woman? Were their stories that women would not be sent to
cover? Considering that it was the age where master-servant liability still applied journalists were not
contract laborers at this time but wage earners what did it mean if a woman was raped on the street while
she was doing her job? What if she were killed?
(Here, however, I must make another slightly different point. Sameera Khan, who worked for the same
newspaper, once told me that she knew who was going to be assigned a story that had a Muslim angle to it;
she would be asked to cover it.) Identity is always an amorphous thing but in India, it is simultaneously the
mountain and the molehill.
Thus one might ask: in terms of identity does an avowed feminist position present a problem to the person
occupying it in an Indian newsroom? The principles of journalism objectivity, balance, neutrality, fairness
require its practitioners to take on the impossible and indefensible position of the impartial observer. To
declare oneself a feminist is to seek exclusion from the boys club of back-slapping masculinity, to distance

Do migrants, especially those from within the European Union, get a __(111)__ deal in Britain than they
would elsewhere in the EU? And do they therefore __(112)__ a disproportionate burden on UK taxpayers?
The answer to the first question is yes, at least compared with some countries, because of the __(113)__ of
the UK benefit system. But despite this, the answer to the second is a __(114)__ no. When Ian Duncan Smith
describes the inflow of EU nationals to claim benefits as a crisis, the only rational reaction is:
Crisis? What crisis?
The UK benefit system is __(115)__ relatively friendly to migrants from within the EU. Migrants from
outside generally have to pass a no recourse to public funds test, and of course __(116)__ migrants and
foreign students are pretty unlikely to end up on benefits. But migrants from within the EU, once they are
habitually resident, have to be __(117)__similarly to UK citizens. And given that our benefit system, for
those of working age, is now mostly means-tested that is, based on income and residence, not __(118)__
that means EU citizens do better here than they would in some other countries, such as Germany, that have
more contributory systems.
Of course, its not quite as simple as that. The UK has far from the most __(119)__ social security system in
Europe, both in terms of benefit levels and overall spending. In France, for example, unemployment benefits
are considerably higher for most people than they are in the UK, while contribution conditions are, if
anything, somewhat weaker; a French teacher or banker losing their job in London might well be__(120)__
how little they would be entitled to here.
