Unit 1: Scientific Principles
Scenario
You have been asked to produce a booklet about plant and animal cells for young adult readers.
Your booklet must contain a labelled plant and animal cell that you have drawn from a real
specimen. You should also include written information on the structure and function of each part of
a plant and animal cell.

To make your publication appeal to students who are very interested in this topic you may like to
include drawings and information on specialist cells such as blood cells, nerve cells, leaf cells or
cells from a plant stem

You must also consider the appearance of your booklet – put lots of effort into its presentation.
Make it fun to read.

You might also want to include other information such as how to use a microscope, a microscope
history timeline famous biologists who have used microscopes in the past – Robert Hooke, Anton
van Leeuwenhoek, Robert Koch or Louis Pasteur

Unit Grading Criteria
P6 – draw and label a plant and animal cell, using a light microscope,
annotating with functions of the components.

M6 – Make drawings of plant and animal cells, seen with a light microscope,
relating the structures to their functions.

U1 D6 - Make drawings of plant and animal cells, seen with a light microscope,
comparing structures and relating to the differing functions of plant and
animal cells.

Task 1: Draw an onion skin cell and produce some notes on the functions of its
components

On plain paper produce a neat diagram of an onion skin cell. You must produce the drawing
and label it using a sharp HB pencil. Do not shade or colour the diagram

On separate paper produce notes on the functions of the following plant cell components
• Nucleus
• Cytoplasm
• Cell membrane
• Cell wall
• Vacuole
• Chloroplasts
You could also include a more colourful drawing of a plant cell in this section

Task 2: Draw a human cheek cell and produce some notes on the functions of its
components

On plain paper produce a neat diagram of a human cheek cell. You must produce the
drawing and label it using a sharp HB pencil. Do not shade or colour the diagram

On separate paper produce notes on the functions of the following plant cell components
• Nucleus
• Cytoplasm
• Cell membrane
You could also include a more colourful drawing of a plant cell in this section

Task 3: Draw and label a range of specialist plant and animal cells

On plain paper produce a series of neat diagrams of a range of specialist cells. Again,
diagrams must be produced using a sharp HB pencil. Do not shade or colour the diagram.
You will need to annotate the diagrams to show how the structure of the cell or its
components are suited to the function of the cell

You may wish to study

• A nerve cell
• Different types of blood cell
• Plant xylem cells
• Different cells found in a leaf

Task 4: Appearance of the booklet

A chance to make your booklet as appealing to the reader as you possibly can.
Design a cover and table of contents

You may wish to include a quiz page, wordsearch, crossword, jokes page, microscopes in
history, microscopes or cells in the news…
