AOTM has established forests on its own forestry farms and in government forests within a 50 km radius of all our
growers (Mpale, Chilanga, Khola, Chikumbutso, Lombwa, Kaombe, Ngala, Dzalanyama and Viphya).
With closer interaction with the Malawi Government through the Forestry department, AOTM has created a
vibrant and sustainable forestry program, while continuing with our reforestation program for the past four years
we continue to liaise with the government on concession for areas where trees have already been logged to enable
us replant trees in order to protect our investment and continue sustaining the supply of wood for our farmers.
Ron Ngwira (Leaf Production Director) and Martin Nyirenda (Forestry Controller) receiving the
Award in Malawi (October 2015)
The increase in our forestry program has created the formation of a separate Forestry department
within Alliance One Malawi and created employment of over 1,500 people within forestry areas
providing much needed employment within the communities and moving people away from
making charcoal and illegal logging. To date more than 220 ex charcoal burners around Dzalanyama
have been employed in Alliance One aorestation projects in order to curb the practice of illegal
logging.
