Client Profile
The client is Jenny Donahue, a 40 year old single mother of 13 year old
autistic son Will. Jenny and Will live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she is
an ICU nurse at the local hospital. Jenny enjoys spending time outdoors
whenever possible and game nights. She is an avid runner and also enjoys
scrapbooking memories of her time with Will. Jenny also enjoys knitting and
needlework. Jenny wants an Art Nouveau style house complete with three
bedrooms, dining room, laundry room, kitchen and bathroom. The space
also needs custom built in display cases for her many collectable medals.
The color palate is warm brown tones.
Concept Statement:
The color scheme is an accented analogous pallete. The space is warm, rich and
comfortable conveyed through brown tones and blue accents. Wood and metals
such as iron and brass will give the space the decorative ornamental design the
client is looking for in an Art Nouveau design. The use of linear and free flowing
lines will also incorporate the Art Nouveau design. Wood floors will be used in the
rooms. Walls may be different in each room. Some using wallpaper with free
flowing lines and floral designs and others using simple paint scheme that will tie in
with the Art Nouveau paintings and dcor. Williams bedroom will have blue walls
and brown furniture.

Justification
Wood and metals such as iron and brass will give the space the decorative
ornamental design the client is looking for in an Art Nouveau design. The use of
linear and free flowing lines will also incorporate said Art Nouveau design. The
colors will be rich wood (browns) and accents of blue throughout the space. The
open floor plan makes for a functional home for the client because she can stand
in any room on the first floor and see her son while cooking, cleaning, relaxing,
etc. They have requested lighting for rooms that complete an Art Nouveau design
and give character to the space. Chandeliers and ceiling lighting is best for safety
purposes of autistic child. The iron bronze color lighting helps to tie in with the
browns of the painting inspiring the color pallet for the project. Art nouveau is
common with metals and irons along with neutral tones and splashes of color to
accent paintings and spaces.

SECTION 808 ELECTRICAL
808.1 New installations.
All new electrical equipment and wiring relating to work done in any work area must comply with the
materials and methods requirements of Chapter 7.
Building Code Justification: Given the age of the building new wiring must be ran in order to be up to
code with safety regulations.
SECTION 811 ENERGY CONSERVATION
811.1 Minimum requirements.
Level 2 alterations to existing buildings or structures are permitted without requiring the entire building
or structure to comply with the energy requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code or
International Residential Code. The alterations shall conform to the energy requirements of the
International Energy Conservation Code or International Residential Code as they relate to new
construction only.
Building Code Justification: The building is not required to be completely redone to comply with said
requirements but rather sections or places of said building.

Code Compliance: Given the year the building was built all new wiring will need to be ran in
order to comply with the electrical code. This also gives a chance to update all wiring for new
appliances and equipment (i.e. 220 hook up for newer model ranges, dryers, water heaters, or air
conditioners) Gives the opportunity to add wiring for more lights if needed

1. I have forgotten to add a window on the other wall. If the window was there
it would seem better balanced. The other problem I that since we were not
given window length I just tried to incorporate them the best I could.
2. I like the proportion of the coffee table to the chairs and couch. Plus the
bigger entertainment center really places well with the windows.
3. If the scale was off it would look as if there was a kitchen or dining room table
in the place of the coffee table. Or that the side chairs were bigger than the
couch and it would make the space looked cramped and unbalanced.
4. The dominant form will be the wall of windows and the sub-dominant form will
be the couch and entertainment center due to their sizes.

Justifying The Solution
After working closely with Ms. Donahue and her son it
wasn't hard to figure out the type of home that reflect their
personalities and wishes while keeping the historical
ambiance of the old building. Art Nouveau is Ms.
Donahue's favorite period and as such I used that as my
starting basis. The colors were inspired by the painting of the
lion passed down by her great-great grandmother. Ms.
Donahue is a nurse so she needed a comfortable and
relaxing home to spend time with her son. The cabinet I
designed has the curves, rich wood and detailing that you
would expect in any Art Nouveau piece, thus will do well
displaying Ms. Donahue's running memorabilia. Making the
space open and functional was my biggest priority so the
Ms. Donahue could watch her autistic son from anywhere
on the main floor.
Reflecting
Over the many things I've learned in this class organization,
building scale models, and the only limitations of creating a
space or piece of furniture is your imagination. It took
awhile to find the right furniture but I stuck with it and
created a beautiful home. Organization is a key part in
working in any design field if you cannot find the work
needed such as receipts, invoices etc than how will the
people working with you such as contractors be able to do
their jobs. Creating a scale model is most difficult because it
was my first time it was exasperating but worked out well in
the end.
