CLASSROOMS
Teachers will participate in an interactive session designed to understand simple strategies to incorporate
mindfulness in Special Education and Inclusion classrooms. Teachers will also investigate the purpose,
theory, and practical uses of mindfulness in an education setting.
Presenters: Clint Labrador and Loretta Labrador

1B: HABITS OF THE MIND IN ACTION

Discover the foundations and purpose of using Habits of Mind (HoM), a framework of dispositions to
develop problem solvers and critical thinkers. Learn the process of concept attainment that will help you
and your students understand the meaning of each HoM and identify ways to incorporate HoMs into your
lessons and classroom practices.
Presenters: Catherine Caine and Stefanie Sweeney

1C: RAISE YOUR VOICE: USING DIGITAL STORYTELLING WITH STUDENTS

More and more, we live in a digital world. This access to digital storytelling gives people around the world
the ability to hear from the voices of those traditionally oppressed or overlooked. This session will cover two
main forms of digital sharing-- podcasts and blogging-- as lessons to work with students. Note: This session
relies heavily on Google Chrome, and is recommended for teachers with consistent computer lab access or
1-to-1 programs at their schools. Please bring laptops.
Presenters: Christina Torres

1D: BUILDING INNOVATIVE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS AROUND SUSTAINABILITY

Explore resources and partnerships to develop sustainability initiatives on your school campus. Dig into
Kkua Hawaii Foundation programs and resources to develop frameworks toward curriculum integration
with overall school sustainability goals, outcomes, and vision. Educators will receive Kkua Hawaii
Foundation grant materials and be provided application support and examples of successful projects.
Presenters: Natalie McKinney, Debbie Milikan, and Lisa Espiritu

1E: PROMOTING RESILIENCE THROUGH CHILDRENS LITERATURE

SESSION 2
2A: P4C HAWAII AND THE PHILOSOPHERS PEDAGOGY
The focus on engaging students in classroom inquiry distinguishes p4c Hawaii from typical approaches to
teaching content in schools. This professional development session aims to provide participants with ideas
and examples of how to bring inquiry and philosophy into a variety of core classroom activities. Participants
will leave this session with: 1) knowledge of the 4 pillars of p4c Hawaii; 2) criteria and a toolkit to aid
students in developing philosophical questions for meaningful and rigorous inquiry; 3) examples of activities
that can be used to utilize students questions and wonderment in their content areas.
Presenters: Dr. Chad Miller and Kiki Bush

2B: NUMBER ROUTINES

Number routines foster a positive learning environment around mathematics for students in your classroom
and engage students in mathematical practices throughout the school year. Educators will participate in a
series of number routines and activities that will develop their understanding of how to build and support
numeracy for all students, increase classroom discourse, and address the mathematical shifts.
Presenters: Sadie Estrella and Mitzi Haesgawa

2C: STUDENT-DRIVEN PROJECT

BASED LEARNING
At SEEQS, our project-based "EQS" (Essential
Question of Sustainability) block focuses on
helping students follow their own interests
and design their own projects within a broad
topic or essential question. In this session, we
will explore the benefits and challenges of
leading student-driven projects, and we will
share the structures and systems we've put in
place thus far to support our students.
Participants will gain tools and ideas for
supporting student-driven projects in any
setting.

children and grandchildren that education
opened doors and made the greatest of
dreams possible. Each of them were
blessed with teachers who nurtured,
challenged, encouraged, and supported
them as they they became their best
selves and found their place in the world
to grow and give back to others.
You are the teachers who are gifting the next generation, our precious great-grandchildren, with
possibilities and hope. They become stronger, more knowledgeable, curious, and compassionate
people because of you and the work you do together every day.
We thank and honor you from the bottom of our hearts.

PROBLEM OF PRACTICE

Guidance for Participants

Session Overview:
This teacher-to-teacher problem of practice session will provide a forum for a colleague to share a
common challenge that he or she is struggling with and for the group to pose questions, react,
and brainstorm and explore the feasibility of solutions. The goal of the session is to provide a
forum for the group to work together on a challenge that is central to improving the teaching
environment or classroom practice.

Session Format:
Welcome and Group Introduction
Each participant shares name/school/role.
Problem of Practice Presentation
Presenter describes his/her problem of practice to the group, including all relevant details and context for
initial questions from the group.
Clarifying Questions
The group asks clarifying questions of the presenter. Clarifying questions are factual questions with brief
responses that help the group understand the problem of practice better. They often begin with "who,
what, where, when, or how.
Probing Questions
The group asks probing questions of the presenter. Probing questions are open-ended and worded so
that they help the presenter clarify and expand his/her thinking about the problem of practice. Answers to
these questions require deeper consideration and longer answers from the presenter.
Group Discussion
Presenter listens while group discusses the problem
of practice. This is an opportunity for participants to
raise similar situations, concerns, and solutions from
their schools and districts.
Reflection and Debrief
The presenter reflects on what he/she heard from
the group, what resonated, and current thinking on
the problem of practice. Group members contribute
additional takeaways for their own districts contexts.
