Control System Tutorial

This document contains 8 questions asking students to draw block diagrams representing various control systems, including: 1) An air conditioning system in a car that maintains a set interior temperature. 2) An electric iron that heats to different temperatures based on the material setting. 3) A series regulator in an electronics circuit with a desired output, actual output, and feedback. 4) A person playing a video game using a joystick on a desktop computer. 5) The process of tacking a sailboat as the wind direction shifts. 6) A home shower system that controls both water temperature and flow. 7) A proposed facial expression control system for a humanoid robot. 8) A direct

TUTORIAL-1
Fig. 1 and Fig.2 show block diagram of open loop control and closed loop control system. Use these
block diagrams to answer the following questions.

Q 1:- Many luxury automobiles have thermostatically controlled air conditioning systems for the comfort
of the passengers. Sketch a block diagram of an air conditioning system where the driver sets the
desired interior temperature on a dashboard panel. Identify the function of each element of the
thermostatically controlled cooling system.
Q2:-All of us know that an automatic electric iron box set at silk will get heated up to a particular value
,and if it is set at wool iron box will get heated up to a higher value. Draw a block diagram
representing the control system. Identify the measuring device and controller.
Q3:-You might have studied series regulator in your electronic circuits laboratory. Draw a block diagram
and identify the desired output, actual output and the feedback element.
Q4:-Describe the block diagram of a person playing a video game. Suppose that the input device is a
joystick and the game is being played on a desktop computer. Use figure 2 as a model of the block
diagram.
Q5:-Because a sailboat cant sail directly into the wind, and travelling straight downwind is usually slow,
the shortest sailing distance is rarely a straight line. Thus sailboats tack upwind the familiar zigzag
course-and jibe downwind. A tacticians decision of when to tack and where to go can determine the

outcome of a race. Describe the process of tacking a sailboat as the wind shifts direction. Sketch a block
diagram depicting this process.
Q6:-A common example of a two-input control system is a home shower with separate valves for hot
and cold water. The objective is to obtain (1) a desired temperature of the shower water and (2) a
desired flow of water. Sketch a block diagram of the closed-loop control system.
Q7:-Robotics Society of DTU is developing a robot with a human like face. The robot can display facial
expressions, so that it can work cooperatively with human workers. Sketch a block diagram for a facial
expression control system of your own design.
Q8:-A direct methanol fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts a methanol water solution to
electricity. Like rechargeable batteries, fuel cells directly convert chemicals to energy; they are very
often compared to batteries, specially rechargeable batteries. However, one significant difference
between rechargeable batteries and direct methanol fuel cells is that, by adding more methanol water
solution, the fuel cells recharge instantly. Sketch a block diagram of the direct methanol fuel cell
recharging system that uses feedback to continuously monitor and recharge the fuel cell.
