Thermostats for Pipeline and Vessel Heating Circuits
Scope
This specification describes the DuPont requirements for weatherproof and explosionproof
thermostats used to control heating circuits installed on pipelines or vessels. Although other
enclosures are available, their use is limited within DuPont for this application, so they are not
described in this specification.
For further design and application information, see DE6H.
2.
Applicability
The thermostats described in this specification are for use in pipeline heating applications in
ordinary (nonhazardous) and classified (hazardous) areas. Listings are provided for North
America and European equipment for global use.
3.
Benefits
Use of this specification provides a ready cross-reference of thermostats available from Alliance
Suppliers that will simplify and improve accuracy of the selection process.
4.
General
A thermostat may be used in some pipeline and vessel heating installations to control system
temperature by turning the heat-tracing system on or off. The contact(s) of the thermostat opens
when a preset temperature is reached and closes at some lower temperature depending on the
temperature differential (deadband) of the unit.
Thermostats can also be used where process fluid temperatures must not be exceeded and to
limit the pipe maximum temperature in hazardous area applications (refer to Controlled design
as defined in IEEE-515, clause 6.5(b) and DE1H.
Depending on the load requirements, the thermostat may be used to control the heat-tracing
circuit directly. However, when the circuit current or voltage exceeds the thermostats rating, the
thermostat is used to switch a power control device (e.g., a magnetic contactor).
5.
Application
For ambient temperature-sensing applications, locate the thermostat in a protected location away
from direct sunlight, wind, or influences of external heat.
Contact the manufacturer for availability of longer capillary lengths. These are required to locate
thermostats at easily accessible locations.
Aluminum heat transfer tape, readily available from Thermon and Tyco Thermal Controls,
provides an effective method of attaching the thermostat capillary or resistance thermal detector
(RTD) to the pipeline or equipment.
For manufacturers and applicable ratings, see Table 1. Listings are provided for standard catalog
thermostats from the two DuPont Strategic Alliance Suppliers for electric heat-tracing systems
(Thermon and Tyco Thermal Controls). Information is provided for both U.S. and European
installations.
