A FUN, EXCITING, AND DIFFERENT

SEPTEMBER AHEAD!
Like all of Richmond... our schedule and September norms are changing
this year due to the bike race.
Based on your responses to our recent survey, and race information that
we have been given, here is the plan:
Sunday, September 6:
Labor Day Weekend worship with communion here at St Johns at 10 am.
Karen-Marie Yust will preach and lead worship.
September 5 - 12:
We will be hosting overnight CARITAS guests this week (see page 2) .
Sunday, September 13:
Worship at 10am, choir is back, following worship a whole church clean-up
day (dress casually): outside to look ready for the race, and inside to ready
ourselves for Homecoming Sunday.
Sundays, September 20 and 27 (Race Week Choices):
Come to the church and be part of offering fellowship to those who are
here to watch the race (contact Don Warren or Vivian White).
Go to First Congregational UCC (4310 Courthouse Road) for
9:30 am Faith Formation and 11:00 am Worship. Linda will preach
during our shared worship there on the 20th and Harvey Joyner the

CARITAS at St. Johns

September 5 - 12
St. Johns again this year is stepping up to host 40 homeless women during the week of
September 5th - 12th Saturday to Saturday. Because this week begins with a holiday
and it is the beginning of the school year, St. Johns is volunteering for a week that
would otherwise be difficult for the CARITAS program to schedule. Last year over 40
people volunteered during the week. Way to go St. Johns!
We want to give an extravagant welcome to our guests and provide them a safe, comfortable and welcoming place to stay Here is how you can help: VOLUNTEER!

Homecoming Sunday - October 4

On October 4th we will have a Homecoming Sunday!! It will truly be
homecoming for all of us, as with the bike race the two weeks before,
we will not be worshipping in our sanctuary.
So here is the plan:

INVITE!
Everyone of us knows friends and members or our congregation who have recently been missing from our community. All those
folks you miss having involved today, call them, and invite them to come be part of our special event!

WORSHIP!
Worship (11:00 am - there will be NO 9:45 am programming this morning) will include celebrating not only World Communion
Sunday but the History of St Johns (which predates anyones living memory).

FELLOWSHIP and SHARE!

Following worship we will have a potluck lunch (rather than fellowship time) and continue telling the churches story with the story as
remembered by those who lived through it.
Mark October 4th on your calendar and plan to join in the fun.

WHATS YOUR VISION?

As I mentioned last month this is an exciting time for us and a
great time to reflect on how St. Johns will evolve. This past
Sunday, Linda once again asked us to pray about our own vision for St. Johns. In three years what do you envision for St. Johns? Last year Council stated this as their vision for St. Johns, St.
Johns is a vibrant community center where people gather to worship, build relationships and be formed in faith, and where community
organizations find support and collaborative energy for compassionate outreach and social justice efforts. It is a church filled with many
groups and activities that support this vision, and it buzzes with activity all day and all week long. Does this vision statement resonate
with you? Would you change it in any way? If so, how? Our vision will help guide us in the decisions we will make in the upcoming
months.

HARD DECISIONS
While we are so blessed with a new Pastor, a faithful congregation and a wonderful facility for which to fellowship and worship we do
have some urgent and longer term challenges that together we need to address. As you know our elevator has not been operational for
several months and it is unclear, at this moment, when it will be fixed. What you may not know is that our chiller (air conditioner) is
hobbling along and we pray it survives through the hot summer months. Our front doors need to be replaced so that we can ensure we
provide the security necessary to safeguard our wonderful facility and all those that use it. These three items alone are very expensive to
repair and/or replace. They may cost upwards of $150,000 or more.
Our facility is almost 100 years old and we have worked hard over the years to maintain it. As you use a critical eye to survey our facility,
Im sure you have noticed a thing or two that needs repair, replacement or rejuvenation. Addressing these additional items may double
the expense I mentioned above. Of course there are a number of options available to us. The Council, Facilities Committee and Board
of Trustees are working to find and prioritize urgent and longer term solutions. Do you have a recommendation?

DO YOU HAVE A RECOMMENDATION?

Early 2016 we will be holding a Congregational Retreat to agree on our vision, our values and how we will move forward with our facility
for the long term. Over the next several months we plan to provide you with an awareness of the issues and possible solutions so you
will be well prepared to discuss and decide how to move forward. In order to make sure the retreat is meaningful what information do
you want to hear?

Now I know Ive asked you a number of questions. In order to get your feedback we will be distributing an electronic survey and adding
questionnaires to the Sunday bulletins. I do hope you will let us know what you are thinking.
In closing, I truly believe these are exciting times and that we have an opportunity to restore, refresh and
revitalize St. Johns. I believe we begin with envisioning all the possibilities that await us.

- - Peace. Desiree McNeice (Council Chair)

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
AUGUST 30
30th

Sunday August
we will hold a Congregational
Meeting to elect 2 new members to fill vacancies on
Council. We will also hear a motion to affirm the
continued work of the Councils Ad Hoc Constitution
and By Laws Committee. Based on your feedback
and Lindas guidance we are seeking to rewrite our
constitution and by-laws in order to reflect current
statutes of St. Johns United Church of Christ.

COMMITTEE SHARING AND PLANNING

The committee chairs and council members are
continuing with our shared awareness and
collaboration meetings. Our next meeting is
September 19th. The focus of these meetings has
been to align sub-committees, ad-hoc committees,
programs and events with a Committee. The group
is also working through adjustments for the
remainder of our 2015 calendar and the
development of our 2016 calendar. Some notable
outcomes of our meetings include;
A transition and change to how we do

be holding a Homecoming event in place of our
traditional Launch Sunday activities.

Stay tuned for upcoming communication on each of

these changes.

NEIGHBORS
IN NEED
Neighbors in Need is
a special mission
offering of the UCC
that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout
the United States. NIN grants are awarded to churches and
organizations doing justice work in their communities. These
grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to
community organizing and advocacy to address systemic
injustice. These grants are funded by the Neighbors in Need
offering. We will be collecting your offerings for this fund on
October 4, 2015.

VIRGINIA PRIDEFEST
SEPTEMBER 12TH
This years annual Virginia PrideFest, a celebration of the
Richmond-area LGBT community, will be held on the
afternoon of September 12th, on Browns Island. As an
ongoing expression of its status as an Open and Affirming
Congregation, St. Johns will have a booth at the event, with
an opportunity to share information about our ministries,
service opportunities, and upcoming events. Volunteers are
needed to help staff the booth for a 1-2 hour shift, so please
contact Jeff Jacobs if you can help, at (202) 361-9887 or
[email protected].

A letter from Jeanette Salley

Jeannette is a member of the church serving as a missionary through the Global Ministries. She was in care with St Johns while
attending VUU, ordained in our sanctuary and supported by the church in her call to Haiti. Jeanette was recently deployed to
Nicaragua having completed her assignment in Haiti. Here is a letter she recently sent...

All is well in Nicaragua. I am serving with the Central Moravian Church in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua (its a mouthful,
isnt it) helping to update/restructure their Christian Education ministry. There are two services11am for the Spanish
speaking members and 4pm for the English speaking members. I attend both services but prefer the 4pm because of the
language barrier. Its going to take a while before I am comfortable with Spanish. I am working on it. The languages spoken in
Nicaragua are Spanish, English and Miskito. Miskito is the language of some of the people from the Atlantic Coast where the
Afro-Caribbean, English speaking, people live also. Its an interesting mix of people and cultures coming together because of
forced labor. I will be traveling there soon and I cant wait to commune and share our historical and spiritual journeys.
I live in a 3 bedroom house located on the next block from the church, which is wonderful.
Next year I will be open to receive visitors and I hope you will be able to come.
Remember me in your prayers as I will continue to pray for you.
Dios te bendiga (God bless you),
Jeanette

CLEAN UP DAY - SEPTEMBER 13

We are preparing a list of what needs to be accomplished on
September 13, 2015, for our St. Johns UCC Clean-up Day.
We hope you will put this date on your calendar and plan to
help us take good care of the wonderful
facility that we have been blessed with and given responsibility for - so that future generations may continue to serve
God here.

The task of deep cleaning in our home

or our church home has a cathartic
effect for our spirit. It brings into focus
care, value, and preparation for life and
being prepared for what God has in
mind. We may be tired at the end of the
day of cleaning, but we also feel accomplished and the results
serve as a reward to our spirit and our psyche.

CLEANING AND REPAIR SUGGESTIONS

Share with us all areas you see in need of care and cleaning.
Look at the Council Bulletin Board
in the hallway by the stairs. Here
are listing sheets for cleaning
projects and please share your
name. We will formulate a plan for
CLEAN-UP DAY with your help in
identifying the projects and
priorities.
While we continue our Honey Do lists and care for our facility
as we can with our own hands, we are continuing the gathering
of bids, information, and possible solutions to the larger
projects for our Church building. There will be more information
to share and discern in the near future regarding our elevator,
air conditioning and other projects requiring repair,
replacement, and rejuvenation.

PARKING LOT INFORMATION FOR

ALL
It is that time again! Students are back living in the area
who attend VUU and VCU. Residents around us are also
feeling the added stress of these more crowded streets and
parking lots. And then, there is the issue of the Bike Race
in September...PARKING IS A BIG ISSUE on Stuart Circle!
We are very fortunate to have our own designated Parking
Lot here at St. Johns. But, if left unattended, or
unsupervised, members and friends of St. Johns attending
church events will be unable to find a spot in our lot. The
Facilities Committee and Church Staff are trying to identify
authorized and un-authorized cars in
our lot. Towing may need to occur.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A
HANG-TAG FOR CHURCH MEMBERS IN YOUR CAR, AND
DISPLAY IT ON YOUR REAR VIEW
MIRROR ANYTIME YOU ARE
PARKING IN OUR LOT.
If you do not have a tag, please ask
Bryan Anderegg or call the church
office for one for each of your cars.

A Prayer For Workers

Loving, Working God,
We ask your special blessing on all people who labor,
either for pay or as volunteers, in jobs or at school, in the
workplace or at home, in the U.S. and around the world.

I would like to thank

everyone for making me feel
so special on my 90th
Birthday! The cake and
card were so lovely.

OPENING OUR DOORS DURING THE

UCI Road World Championships
WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME TO ST. JOHNS AND
OFFER WELCOME TO CITY VISITORS?

We especially pray for your blessings on workers who do

not have jobs and for those whose inadequate pay does
not allow them to live the full life you intend for each of
us.

Though St. John's will not have

a regular worship service on
Sunday Sept. 20 & 27 - we will
open our doors to those
visiting our city for the race.

Creator God, help us to build a new world in the midst

of the old.

Parking and entrance to the

area around St. John's will be
extremely limited!

A world where all workers are valued.

A world where those who clean houses are also able to
buy houses to live in.

A world where those who grow food can also afford to

eat their fill.

Plans are for the church to be

open 10:00-2:00. If anyone
wants to join in welcoming the
Bike Race to Richmond, please
contact Vivian White so we can
plan on carpooling.
[email protected]

A world where those who serve and care for others are,
themselves, also served and cared for.
We pray for the coming of a world where all workers
everywhere share in the abundance that you have given us.
We ask these things knowing that you give us the courage
and strength to live out our faith in the workplace and
the marketplace, as well as in the sanctuary.

Amen.

Reiki I Class Saturday September 26

Reiki is a form of healing prayer that supports the
energy system in your body. Energy flows through all
living things. When your energy is blocked or low you
are more susceptible to illness. When your energy is
strong you can more easily deal with stress and are
less likely to get sick. Reiki is a technique that increases a
persons supply of life energy.
Pastor Linda has been a Reiki master for 10 years. She is offering
another opportunity to take the Reiki I class for those who would
like to learn this summer. The class will be on July 25th from 10am to 7pm
at June Smyths home.
This class (usually costs $150 plus the cost of the manual), but for St. Johns friends and
members, you only need to pay for your manual which costs $25 with shipping from the
International Reiki Center. It is suggested that you reflect this difference in your offering to the
church acknowledging this gift from Pastor Linda.
The sign-up sheet and an envelope for your payment is on the bulletin board outside the Pastors office. You must register by
September 13th so we have time to get the manuals. If you want more information on Reiki there are brochures outside Pastor
Lindas office.

Visitors and friends of

St. Johns who are interested in
exploring membership are
invited to join the pastor for an
inquirers class on Sunday,
October 11, following worship.
Please hold the date and contact
Linda for more information.
