TITLE
1.1 Introduction
The traditional methods of conducting laboratory activities (assigned as Level 0)
will not be able to provide the avenue for students to enhance independent
learning activities and inculcate creativity and innovation. The traditional method is
fully prescriptive where the three elements namely problem, ways & means and
answers are provided/fully given to the students. However, it is still necessary to
be implemented as part of the whole laboratory course activity especially to first
and second year students.
In this laboratory activity students will be exposed to the apparatus and the
procedures to carry out experiment on a suspension cable system.
1.2 Objective
To determine the relationship between applied load and the tensile force in
the suspension cable.
PREAMBLE
Dec 2015
Students are required to determine the relationship between applied load and the
tensile force in the suspension cable.
3.1 Apparatus
Suspension Bridge
3.2 Procedures
WAYS &
MEANS
1. Check the profile for the bridge to be tested and where necessary set
the cable position as detailed in the Figure 9.2.

RESULTS
Using data in Table 9.1 and Table 9.2, plot the graph of cable tension against load
for the experimental and theoretical case. Draw the best fit curve to pass through
the plotted points. Calculate the percentage error between theoretical and
experimental result.
The report must incorporate the followings:
i.
All data recorded must be tabulated in the given form provide and the
graph plotted on the graph.
ii. Any calculation must be clearly shown.
iii. Discuss on the results and state your conclusion
The report must be submitted 7 days after the completion of the test.
