ReproductioninProtozoa
AsexualReproduction
Asexualreproductionisthemostcommonmeansofreplicationbyprotozoans.Theabilitytoundergoa
sexualphaseisconfinedtotheciliates,theapicomplexans,andrestrictedtaxaamongtheflagellatesand
sarcodines.Moreover,sexualreproductiondoesnotalwaysresultinanimmediateincreaseinnumbersbut
maysimplybeameansofexchangingimportantgeneticmaterialbetweenindividualsofthesamespecies
(conjugation).Freelivingprotozoansnormallyonlyresorttosexualreproductionwhenenvironmental
conditionsbecomeadverse,becausethismodeofreproductionenhancesthefitnessofthepopulationand
increasesthechanceofmutation.Whenfoodandotherconditionsarefavourable,asexualreproductionis
practiced.
Asexualreproductioninfreelivingspeciesusuallyinvolvesnucleardivisionandthedivisionofthecellinto
twoidenticaldaughtercellsofequalsizebybinaryfission.Inparasiticprotozoaandsomefreeliving

SexualReproduction
