Course Aims:
This course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge in Information
and Communication Technologies. It provides skills necessary for various business
applications. The course has considered mostly and widely used applications such
as Word Processing, Electronic Spreadsheets, Presentation packages, Data
Management, Internet use and applications. This course has also been designed
to provide a necessary knowledge of computer hardware and software. Students
will be exposed to the use of computer in business, education and other areas
where computer is widely applied.
Course Description
This is a one unit course which introduces students to different aspects of
information technology, basing on the major computer skills (Microsoft office
practices, information technology devices like computers devices and aspects
like internet). It also gives students the basic information searching strategies as
well as exposing them to various sources of information.

Outline the issues relating to the effective use and management of


information systems,

Demonstrate an understanding of the physical construction and architecture of


computer in terms of RAM, CPU and I/O devices,
Explain the evolution of the computers and identify the most appropriate computer
for their needs to perform several calculations and conversions of the different
number systems including Decimal, Binary, Octal and hexadecimal numbers.
Identify computer display technologies
Explain functionalities and apply the GUI based Microsoft Windows XP operating
system.
Explain functionalities and apply the command line based Microsoft Disk (MS DOS)
operating system.
Use and Apply Microsoft Word for office word processing.
Use and Apply Microsoft Word program for office word processing.
Use and Apply Microsoft Excel program for office electronic spreadsheet processing.
Use and Apply Microsoft Access program for office data processing and
management.
Explain the computer networks, network topologies and protocols.
Explain how the internet works.
Use and Apply Google search engine for internet information retrieval.
