INTRODUCTION
Rural Immersion Programme (RIP) is an initiative that was instituted with an objective to
sensitize participants of IIM Indore, who in future will become entrepreneurs or occupy
managerial positions in the corporate world. Many participants come from urban background
and may not have seen or experienced a rural area are rural life. RIP provides an opportunity
for participants to see villages first hand, interact with district officials and villagers, observe
the rural economy, understand the challenges and opportunities for business, and develop an
overall understanding of the rural society. The students will also get to know the various
schemes undertaken by Government in villages and to study and analyze the execution and
effectiveness of these schemes.
The Government of India (GoI) initiated its national flagship programme on sanitation, the
Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) in 1999. The TSC is a restructured version of the Central
Rural Sanitation Programme (CRSP). In Madhya Pradesh, the TSC was launched in 1999.
Later on, TSC (was revised and renamed Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan- NBA as of April 2012, And
On 2nd Oct 2014, NBA was revised and renamed Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin) is
implemented in all 51 districts, comprising 313 blocks.
SBMG is piloting it concurrent monitoring system in Madhya Pradesh and to pilot this
SBMG is engaging IIM student to support the PRD to undertake a WASH validation exercise
in selected districts of Madhya Pradesh. The main goal of the assignment is to validate the
ODF status of Gram Panchayats, including toilet coverage and usage with inclusive of the
prevailing practices or behaviors on key hygiene practices like handwashing with soap, Safe
child excreta disposal and menstrual hygiene.
The programme is spread over a week, and participants visit several districts of Madhya
Pradesh. Participants are divided into group of 4 (preferably 3 males and 1 female) and are
sent to different Gram Panchayat (GPs) in different districts, which have expressed interest in
hosting and working together.
This year the participants take up the broad project of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).
There are many GPs who have declared themselves as Open Defecation Free (ODF) GP. The
group of students will visit 145 GPs from 6 districts of Madhya Pradesh. They will monitor,
evaluate and validate the ODF claim of the respective GPs. There is a huge gap in reported
data and actual data from different sources. The students of IIM Indore will work as an

unbiased independent auditor of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) programme

undertaken by the Government of India.
It is estimated that an average of 6 Districts 145 GPs will be surveyed for 100% households
Per GP and an approx. of 145 schools and 145 anganwadis will be surveyed across districts.
A structured questionnaire has been developed and trained the participants by UNICEF in
consultation with the MP State Government. The participants survey the households (using
random sampling method) and primary school and anganwadi to understand the real picture
of the WASH validation exercise in selected district of MP. At the end of the programme
participants present their findings both quantitative and qualitative recommendation to the
State Government and the UNICEF. The report will be useful for corrective measures and
scale-up of validation.
