At a loss: From 277 for 1 to 323 all out

Chasing 349, Dhawan and Kohli hit tons, but India collapse spectacularly, losing nine wickets for 46 runs to fall 25 runs short in the fourth ODI at Canberra

That India with its batters pickled in IPL glory
of impossible run-chases, needed a mere 75
runs in 13 overs with nine wickets in hand to
get to the target and contrived to lose from
there, is cold water to the face even for a captain who had thrown his hands up on his incompetent bowlers while believing that his
batsmen could get him an elusive win.
But India cruelly learnt in a match, where
Australia opted to bat first, that it takes more
than two centuries of audacious chestthumping, growling intent, to win a match.

But it was an inexplicably impetuous

spooned a catch to Smith at mid-off, that set
the teeth grinding.

India were 274 for 1 at one stage with another 75 needed off the last 13 overs. A nottoo-difficultwinwasonthecardsatthatstage
as Dhawan and Kohli had taken charge completely before Dhawan was out at 126.
It couldve been shrugged off as a setback
but John Hastings, who got Dhawan, later

looking for an easy runs by now was soon on
the back-foot. Ajinkya Rahane had four
stitches on his finger webbing which meant
he came out to bat late.
The onus was once again on Kohli. He has
been the reason for several of Indias big
chases lately and the boy had changed
Indias perception when it came to big totals. He was Indias answer to a Glenn
Maxwell or George Bailey, who had successfully and repeatedly achieved this for
Australia in past few games. But Kohli would
betray the Indian penchant for not finishing
at the most inopportune moments.
Kohlis wicket left the door open for
Australians and nobody knows better than
them how to pounce on such opportunities.

Canberra while India were restricted to 309 in Perth.

Identical starts (1 to 5)

In the first five overs, both teams approached in much the same manner.
While Australia managed 59 for no
loss in the first 10 overs, India weren't
quite far behind at 52/1.

That Mahendra Singh Dhoni mostly
employed Rishi Dhawan, Gurkeerat
Singh Mann (who inexplicably replaced

helped the hosts' cause. It was here that
Dhoni might have missed R Ashwin

Stable in the middle

(25 to 35)
Australia racked up 43 runs between
the 25th and 30th over.
India,withKohliandSharmawellinto
their half-centuries, made just 29 runs,
bottled up by Josh Hazlewood's two
overs that cost just four runs, even
as they fed on James Faulkner's
waywardnessandGlennMaxwell'sgenerosity.
The next five overs, following
Warner's exit, were quiet, yielding only
16 runs, but the initial platform meant
that they were still spurting along at
nearly 6 an over by the 35th over. India
increased their tempo, but were
modestly placed at 180 for 1 at the end
of 35th. In hindsight, perhaps Sharma
and Kohli could have shown more
urgency.

Pre-death blast (35 to 45)

Completing his century, Aaron Finch

broke free, and he's complimented to no
less extent by Steve Smith.
Even after Finch was ejected, Smith
kept going, with occasional boundaries
from Mitchell Marsh, as Indian bowlers
showed not even a semblance of control
or creativity to check the flow.
Subsequently, they ended up leaking
90 runs in the 10-over phase between
overs 35 and 45.
Sharma too completed his century at
aboutthesametimeasFinch.Butheand
Kohli couldn't quite force the pace. They

enough to mount a 350 or roundabout
score. The brakes were again applied by
Hazlewood, whose three overs spilled
just 17 runs.

Final flourish (48 to 50)

After46overs,Australiawereon304/4,
and they lost George Bailey in the 47th,
but power-packed as they were down
the order, it hardly hassled them, as
Glenn Maxwell exploded.
Even Ishant, the most experienced
Indian bowler, could do little to stem the
flow. So they thrashed 40 runs in the last
three, despite losing wickets in heap.

Sharma's enterprise, but the final flourishcouldn'tmakeupforthemiddle-over

this level. Gurkeerat is a batsman who bowls

lack of poise or understanding of a percentage shot for that situation. Then there is

Dhoni was asked point-blank if the duo
didn't have the stomach for an international
outing. Dhoni smiled and said he'd answer it
though "its not a positive question".
The final blame though in this botched
chase will fall on the aloof Ravindra Jadeja,

that those around him were scripting for the
team. Expected to cajole partners into keeping their heads, Jadeja would go coy on datenight. The lionheart who'd pulled off a heist
at Auckland two years ago, would go into a
shell and never emerge, content to dawdle
on and stay unbeaten.
