MATH 173 (NUMERICAL METHODS I) SYLLABUS

2nd Semester AY 2015-2016

Class Hours: Lecture TF 11:30-12:30 CL4 / Lab W 9:00-12:00 CL4
Office Hours
My office hour is 8:00 -12:00/ 1:00-4:00 daily. If you are not available on these times,
you may set an appointment or you may drop by at DPSM office. Email is a good way to
contact me.
Consultation Hours
We are obliged to fulfill a minimum of 10 hours of consultation for the students. You
may consult me in these times:
MTh 9:00-12:00/ W 1:004:00/ TF 2:00-3:00. Aside from the set time for consultation, you
may also consult me through our web group. You may post comments, suggestion and
clarifications there. Some announcements will also be posted there.
General Description
This course is about numerical methods with emphasis on algorithms and convergence,
error analysis and computer arithmetic. Other topics that will be discussed are solutions of
nonlinear equations of the form f(x) = 0,polynomial interpolation, approximation; direct and
iterative methods for solving linear systems; numerical differentiation and integration.

Prerequisites: A passing grade in Math 121 and Math 55, or permission of the instructor.
This course involves a lot of programming. Students should be familiar with any
programming Language. Math 153 is a good preparation for this course.
Scilab. The main programming tool that will be used in this course is Scilab. Its a free
software. You may download it from http://www.scilab.org/. Manuals can also be downloaded
from related sites.
Course Structure/ Approach The class will use lecture-discussion format.
Absences/Make up Classes

You are only allowed a maximum of six (6) absences. For a 3-unit class, each absence
is equivalent to 1.5 hrs. Make up classes will be scheduled in place of class days that fall on
a holiday.
Machine Problems/Problem sets
Machine problems and Problem sets are given regularly (usually after a topic has
been discussed). Deadline of each MP is a week after it was given. A defense of the code
shall be required of machine problems with programming. Machine problems usually involve
programming, thus a code is needed. Problems sets usually involve analysis and discussion
of a particular method. They involve both theoretical and computational exercises.

Submission of Machine Problems/ Codes


1. Handwritten part. Use bond paper ( if more than one page, staple them). You may also
submit a scanned file or a pdf file.
2. Submit .sce file of every code. Label the file as MP1_Lastname.sce
3. send your codes through my email or pm me in facebook
4. Put some documentations in your codes.
Grading Policy
2 exams 30% ; machine problems (codes of various numerical methods that need to
be implemented ) (20%); problem sets (assignments/homeworks) (30%); final exam
20%
