Rico Gonzales, General
Manager of Philips Lighting
in the Philippines led the
team. Dr Manzo
emphasised that he was
looking for a lighting solution
that was sustainable, and
positively impacting the
healing environment for
critically ill patients and the
work environment for ICU
staff. And very importantly
as a public hospital, it was
imperative that the Philips
solutions we propose make
sound financial sense, so we
had to be mindful of all these
considerations.

The Solution
The Philips team worked closely with the hospital
management and recommended Philips HealWell
technology for the medical ICU.
HealWell is a new lighting solution for patients rooms that
addresses the human bodys natural responses to light. This
state of the art technology can simulate natural sunlight indoors,
allowing patients to maintain their biorhythm and have an
enhanced sense of comfort and well-being. It features defined
pre-sets for different dynamic lighting environments and lighting
levels required, such as ambient lighting and work lighting for
examinations. Warmer or cooler light can also be programmed to
go along with a natural rhythm of light, from sunrise to sundown.

The positive effects of HealWell lighting has been validated

by studies conducted in the cardiology department at the
Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands,
which have shown that HealWell lighting improves the
mood and quality of sleep for patients, as well as the
general work environment.
Dr Manzo was keen to give the new lighting technology a try. He
said, It is not really new knowledge for us that the body follows

natural lighting which greatly improves their working
environment, said Carmencita A. Lingan, Department
Manager of Special Areas at the Center.
It (lighting to complement healing) is something that we are
trying to embrace with enthusiasm here in the Philippine Heart
Center. Its very very new for us but we are happy with the initial
impact of the project that weve implemented in this short period
of time, said Dr Manzo.
Philips sustainable lighting solutions also help the Heart Center to fulfil
its on-going green initiatives and aspirations to continue being a toprated hospital, without undermining the need to ensure that
investments in technology and facilities are well-made and financially
sound. The hospital has also indicated that it is proud to have made
history with its adoption of lighting technology. It is the first and only
hospital in Asia and only the second in the world, to use the Philips
HealWell lighting system.

For the Philips country team, Kathie Tardio, Product Manager for
Professional Solutions and Controls said, The Philippine Heart
Center project has also showcased Philips ability to draw on
expertise from both our regional and global counterparts. This
really helps us to bring about greater responsiveness to the lighting
concerns of our customers.
