Media Advisory: April 7, 2010

The Montgomery County Planning Department is scheduling four public meetings in April to gather input on updating the county's Master Plan of Highways. The plan is being comprehensively revised for the first time since 1955 to incorporate all approved road changes from area master plans into a single document and to reflect an expanded scope to include transitways. At the meetings, transportation planners will provide an overview of potential road classification changes and maps to review, and invite public discussion. The updated Master Plan of Highways and Transitways will consolidate all past and planned changes to roads and transitways into a single source.

Transportation Planners Schedule Public Meetings on Montgomery County Master Plan of

Highways Project

SILVER SPRING – Planners updating the Master Plan of Highways will seek input at four
community meetings scheduled in April. The comprehensive update of the plan, the first since
1955, will compile all the roadway changes approved in area master plans in one document.

In addition to updating the road network with current classifications, the new master plan also
will encompass transitways, rail stations, and other transit centers in area master plans. To reflect
the greater scope, the plan name will change to the Master Plan of Highways and Transitways.

The plan will incorporate road changes and align them with the County Road Code, which was
comprehensively revised in 2007. To better organize roadway information, the plan will feature
an alphabetized list of all roads, their classifications, and details such as number of lanes and the
rights-of-way widths for each road.

At the public meetings, transportation planners will provide an overview of potential changes to
the classification of some roads, provide definitions of each classification and describe what
those changes would mean. Visitors will be invited to review and discuss with planners maps
depicting the classes of roads being considered for re-classification.

The countywide document will bring into sync changes to roads and transitways that have
occurred through master and sector plans, a few of which are approved and adopted each year.
Overall, planners expect that the new Master Plan of Highways and Transitways will be a one-
stop source for residents and anyone curious about area roads.
