b. Determine the maximum and minimum shearing stress in the
aluminum jacket
C. Calculate the angle of twist at A

PROBLEM 2
A steel rod 3 m long is secured between two walls. Compute the stress in

PROBLEM 3 (MAY 2011 CE BOARD EXAM)

A water tank 3m in diameter and 6 m high is made from a steel having a
thickness of 12mm.
a. When the tank is filled with water, determine the circumferential
stress.
b. Determine the longitudinal stress at the bottom of the tank
when it is filled with water.
c. If the circumferential stress is limited to 5 MPa, what is the
maximum height of water to which the tank may be filled.
PROBLEM 4
The wall thickness of a 4 ft diameter spherical tank is 5/16 in.
a. Calculate the allowable internal pressure if the stress is limited
to 8000 psi.
b. Calculate the bursting force in the shell.
TORSION is produced when there is twisting in the member due to
torques in opposite rotation applied at the ends.
TORSIONAL / SHEARING STRESS
