C AUTION
Do not attempt to make such connections yourself. Contact the appropriate electric inspection
authority, or electrician.
The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) assigned to each terminal device denotes the pecentage of the total load to be connected to a
telephone loop which is used by the device, to prevent overloading. The termination on a loop may consist of any combination of devices
subject only to the requirement that the total of the REN of all devices does not exceed 5. The REN for the ION 8000 series meters optional
internal modem is 0.6.
INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
Installation and maintenance of the ION 8000 series meter should only be performed by qualified, competent personnel that have
appropriate training and experience with high voltage and current devices. Every effort has been made to ensure the installation
instructions presented in this document are clear and easy to understand; however, if you are not sure how to perform any of
the instructions provided, DO NOT CONTINUE THE INSTALLATION. The ION 8000 series meter must be installed in
accordance with all Local and National Electrical Codes.
WARNING
During normal operation of the ION 8000 series meter, hazardous voltages are present on its
terminal strips, and throughout the connected potential transformer (PT), current transformer
(CT), status input, control power and external I/O circuits. PT and CT secondary circuits are
capable of generating lethal voltages and currents with their primary circuit energized. Follow
standard safety precautions while performing any installation or service work (i.e. removing PT
fuses, shorting CT secondaries, etc).
The terminal strips on the ION 8000 series meter base should not be user-accessible after
installation.
Do not use digital output devices for primary protection functions. These include applications
where the device performs energy limiting functions or provides protection of people from injury.
If failure of the device can cause injury or death, or cause sufficient energy to be released that a fire
is likely, do not use the ION 8000 series meter. The ION 8000 series meter can be used for
secondary protection functions.
Do not HIPOT/Dielectric test the digital inputs, digital outputs, or communications terminals.
Refer to the label on the ION 8000 series meter for the maximum voltage level the device can
withstand.
CAUTION
Failure to observe the following may result in permanent damage to the device:
The ION 8000 series meter offers a range of hardware options that affect input ratings. The serial
number label of the ION 8000 series meter lists all equipped options. Applying current levels
incompatible with the current inputs will permanently damage the ION 8000 series meter. This
document provides detailed installation instructions applicable to each hardware option. Refer to
the ION 8000 series meter Users Guide for a detailed list of all options and their associated ratings.
The ION 8000 series meter chassis ground must be properly connected to the switchgear earth
ground for the noise and surge protection circuitry to function correctly. Failure to do so will void
the warranty.
The ION 8000 series meter status inputs can only be used for dry contact sensing applications.
Connection of an external voltage source to any of the status inputs of a standard equipped ION
8000 series meter can cause permanent damage.

DANGER: Use circuit closing devices on current transformer secondaries. Dangerous currents and voltages are present. Equipment damage, personal injury and death can result
if circuit closing devices are not used.
1. Examine the label on the front panel of the meter to verify that the service type
matches your intended application.
TIP
Determine the types of revenue
sealing devices you want to use
before installing the meter.
2. If required, attach an anti-tamper seal through the outer cover of the meter to
seal the outer casing to the backplate.
3. If you have a socket with a lever, open the socket jaws.
4. Align the meter so that the chassis ground strap contacts the ground source on
the socket.
5. Be sure the communications wiring from the back of the unit has a clear path
to any external devices.
Feed any communications wiring through the socket opening. If your socket is
the "OPEN" type, hold the wiring to the side of the meter before you push it
into the socket.
6. Push the meter into the socket so that the back makes contact with the socket
flange. Ensure that the unit blades are firmly in place within the jaws of the
socket.
7. Check that the ground strap has made contact with the grounded surface.
8. Attach the socket-sealing ring and seal the Demand Reset switch if required.

TIP
You can draw-out the meter
from its case to facilitate the
case installation into the
mounting hole.
Examine the meters front panel label to verify that the service type matches
your intended application. Prepare a mounting hole for the switchboard case.
2. Mount the case in the hole and fasten the mounting screws and lock washers.
3. Wire the phase voltages and current to the terminal posts according to the
following wiring diagrams and your professional knowledge and expertise.
4. Connect the meter chassis ground to an earth-grounded surface.

CAUTION: The meter must be installed with an adequate chassis ground connection. Use authorized utility procedures to install the ground connection
before wiring. Hazardous voltages are present on the device. Ground the
device BEFORE power is applied. Failure to properly connect the meter switchboard chassis ground voids the warranty.
