Rainbow cabinet sworn in

After innumerable rounds of intense discussions and negotiations over the past few days, Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh’s new government was finally unveiled. Besides the 19 ministers who were inducted
last Friday, the Prime Minister and Congress president Sonia Gandhi finalised an additional list of 14
ministers, seven ministers of state with independent charge and 38 ministers of state, were sworn in on the
morning of 28 May at the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Ashoka Hall.
Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani was conspicuous by his absence at the ceremony. The Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) leader had attended the first instalment of ministerial inductions last week.
The magnum 79-member strong council of ministers of the new UPA government includes 19 members
from the allies- seven each from the DMK and the Trinamul Congress, three from the Nationalist Congress
Party (NCP) and one each from the National Conference and the Muslim League.
As the ceremony proceeded with clockwork precision, the others quickly followed suit. Some fumbling
a bit, like Congress’ Jairam Ramesh who forgot to sign the register after his oath and V. Narayansamy who
asked the president to wait a bit while he settled his papers. But Saugata Ray of the Trinamool Congress
was a man in a hurry and started off even before the President could prompt him, leading to laughs all
around.
Agatha Sangma daughter of former Lok Sabha speaker P.A.Sangma was the cynosure of all eyes as
she is the youngest minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet. Wearing a traditional stole and sarong in
beige and white, 28-year-old Sangma fumbled twice mid-sentence but the whole hall was in applause and
smiles when she finished taking the oath.

Monks walkathon for environment

Monks and nuns of a 800-year-old Buddhist sect have begun a marathon padyatra to propa-
gate environmental conservation and spread awareness about the indiscriminate use of plas-
tics and motor vehicles.
Led by their spiritual leader the Gyalwang Drukpa, 600 monks dressed in deep red robes
would travel across the snow-clad Himalayas in a month long ‘padyatra’ that will culminate
in the Hemis Festival in Ladakh later next month.
“The yatra is a way of embracing the ‘walking life’, which is beautiful and stress free.
Why should we quit walking for cars and helicopters, when they cause so much damage to
nature,” the Gyalwang Drukpa told reporters here before commencing the journey on May
25.
The ‘walkathon’ is expected to gather more volunteers and fellow Drukpas along the
400-km stretch.
The Drukpa leader says he is expecting upto 1000 followers to join him en route the
journey where they would talk to villagers about the environment and also distribute pam-
phlets and canvas bags.
“We want to spread the message of environmental protection and are not marching for
Buddhism. The aim is to interact with people living in the remotest corners of the Himalayas
and get to know nature more intimately,” the spiritual leader said

Bollywood
Today star power is lacking
Post the action-packed grand finale of the Dance India Dance show, the dance reality show on Zee, the undisputed
disco king turned dance guru, Mithun Chakraborty is clearly elated with the kind of attention and curiosity his show
garnered. In an exclusive interview after the finale, Mithun spoke about the show and the challenges it involved.
It was a tough job being the judge of a reality
show. That is because it was an impromptu show,
without any script whatsoever. We were in for
surprises throughout the show as none of us had
any idea what would happen the next minute.
However, I guess it was this very element of spon-
taneity that made the show a huge success on tele-
vision.
I clearly told the Zee authorities that I was
not a game to doing theatre antics and hi-pitched
melodrama in order to boost TRP ratings. I have
always been honest to the core in everything I do,
right from the time I first made my debut in acting
33 years ago in Mrinal Sen’s Mrigaya. I also told
them categorically that I would not in any way
create any drama for the show. They also agreed
when I told them that emotion should not come
in the way of judgment of talent in the show. I
decided from the very outset that the USP of the
show was ‘Ek aam aadmi ko star banana’ (to make
a common man into a star).
