THE

GREAT CENOBIARCH - 11 JANUARY

St Theodosios the Great Cenobiarch

St Theodosios the Great Cenobiarch lived during the Fifth/Sixth Centuries circa 423
529 and was the Founder and Organiser of Cenobitic Monasticism.
St Pachomios the Great circa 292 346 was the earliest Inspired Founder of
Cenobitic Monasticism
in the Egyptian Desert, while the Monastery of St
Theodosios the Great was founded East of the village of Cathismos (Al-Ubeidiya) in
the West Bank, 12 kilometres East of Bethlehem, Palestine.
(The current structure was built by the Western Crusaders in the 12th Century, which is
located on a hilltop and is now under the administration of the Greek Orthodox
Church.)
St Theodosios had been born in the Province of Cappadocia, in the village of
Mogarissos, and his devout parents, Proheresios and Eulogia, raised him as a most
Faithful, Humble and Obedient Christian.
Having been endowed with a splendid voice, St Theodosios zealously served God by
reading and chanting.
He Loved God with all his being, and fervently besought our Lord to Guide him on the
Way to Salvation.
During his younger years he had visited the Holy Land and met some wonderful,
inspiring Holy Church Fathers and in particular St Symeon the Stylite, who
Blessed him and predicted future Pastoral Service for him, which he certainly
fulfilled in his later years.
Yearning for Solitary Life, St Theodosios settled in Palestine where he lived in a
desolate cave in which according to Holy Tradition the Three Magi had spent a
night (after having gone to worship the Great New Born King our Lord and
Saviour, Jesus Christ - in Bethlehem, where His Family resided for a short while
before the horrifying Slaughter of the 14,000 Holy Innocents.
St Theodosios lived for 30 years in great Asceticism and Unceasing Prayer, but after a
short while, innumerable Christian Disciples flocked to him for his Spiritual
Wisdom and Guidance.
When the cave could no longer accommodate all the Monks, St Theodosios prayed to
our Lord, requesting Him to indicate a suitable site for the Monks to live. Then,
taking a Censer with cold charcoal and Incense, he set off into the desert until,
miraculously, at a certain place the charcoal spontaneously ignited itself, and the
Incense smoke rose towards Heaven.
Having been Divinely Sanctified the site became the first Cenobitic Monastery or Lavra
(broad or populous) in Palestine.
St Savvas the Sanctified, a friend and fellow countryman of St Theodosios, was
appointed Archimandrite of the Monks in Palestine by the Patriarch of Jerusalem,
Sallustios, and St Theodosios was made the Spiritual Leader of all the Cenobitic
Monks thus entitling him Cenobiarch. (Cenobitic Monasticism is a Communal Monastic
Life in Christ.)
Up to 700 Monks gathered at the Lavra of St Theodosios, ... rendering Service to
neighbour, aid to the poor and destitute, and providing shelter for wanderers.
There was a communal table, communal property, communal Penance, communal
labour, communal Patience and quite often communal hunger and hardship.
St Theodosios was an exalted Model of Life in Christ to all the Monks. He was the best
example of physical and Spiritual Labours, Prayer, Fasting, Watchfulness and all
Christian Virtues.
He was also extremely Compassionate, and once, when a famine in Palestine drove a
great multitude to the Monastery, he issued order to allow everyone without
exception - into the Monastery enclosure.

REMEMBER & RESPECT OUR HOLY CHURCH FATHERS & WE MUST REMAIN LOYAL & OBEDIENT TO
ORTHODOX DOCTRINE & WORSHIP

Brethren: remember those who rule over you - those who spoke to you the Word of
God. Consider the outcome of their Lives, and imitate their Faith.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings. It is Good that the heart be
Strengthened by Grace not by foods, which have not benefitted their adherents.
We have an Altar - from which those who serve the Tabernacle have no right to eat.
The bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the Sanctuary by the
High Priest as a Sacrifice for sin are burnt outside the Camp. Jesus also suffered
in order to Sanctify the People through His own Blood, outside the gate.
Therefore, let us go forth to Him outside the Camp, to bear the abuse He
endured.
Here we have no Lasting City, but we seek that which is to come. Through Him then,
let us continually offer up a Sacrifice of Praise to God that is: the Fruit of lips
that Confessed His Name.
Share what you have - do not neglect to do Good. Such Sacrifices are pleasing to
God.

At that time our Lord Jesus said: All Things have been Delivered to Me by My
Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know
the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son Wills to reveal Him.
Come to Me, all you who Labour and who are heavily Laden, and I will grant you
Rest. Take My Yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I Am gentle and lowly in
heart.
And you will find rest for your souls, for My Yoke is easy and My

THE

GREAT CENOBIARCH - 11 JANUARY

His Disciples were annoyed and anxious for they knew that the Monastery did not have
the means to feed the great number of starving men, women and children who had
sought assistance from them.
However, having been assured by St Theodosios that God will never fail His People,
when they entered the Monasterys bakery, they were shocked to see that through
their Abbots Prayers, it was filled with more than enough bread to feed everyone.
This Great Divine Miracle was repeated every time St Theodosios wanted to feed those
who were starving.
St Theodosios and his faithful Monks built a home for sheltering strangers, separate
infirmaries for sick Monks and laymen, and a hospice for those who were dying.
People from all over the known world gathered at the Lavra, so St Theodosios arranged
for the Holy Services and Hymns to be offered to God in the various languages of
the people: Greek, Georgian, Armenian, etc.
However, when all were gather to receive the Holy Mysteries in the large church, the
Divine Liturgy was chanted in Greek.
During the reign of Emperor Anastasios, the heresy of Eutychios and Severos arose,
which rejected the Holy Mysteries and the Clergy. The Emperor accepted their
false teachings and Orthodox Christians began to suffer much persecution.
St Theodosios stood firmly in defence of Orthodoxy, and wrote a letter to Emperor on
behalf of all the Monks wherein they denounced him as a heretic and refuted the
heresy with the True Teachings of the Ecumenical Councils.
Furthermore, he affirmed that the Desert-dwellers and Monks would firmly support
Orthodox Teaching only.
The Emperor showed restraint for a short while, but then he renews the persecution of
the Orthodox Christians, whereupon, his great zeal for Divine Truth alone, drove St
Theodosios to go to Jerusalem and in the Church of the Resurrection, he stood in
the Ambon and cried out aloud for all to hear: Whoever does not honour the four
Ecumenical Councils let him be Anathema!!
He was immediately arrested by the Imperial Authorities and imprisoned but when the
Emperor had reposed unrepentant, St Theodosios was able to return to his
Monastery.
Many Divine Healings and Miracles occurred through his Intercessory Prayers during
and after his earthly life, for God granted St Theodosios the Gift of Miracle Works
whereby he was able to Heal the physically and spiritually ailing people, to appear
to people even while a great distance away from them, to tame wild beasts, to
Discern the future, and to cause bread and wheat to multiply.
He prayed ceaselessly and through his Prayers, he destroyed great swarms of locusts
that had begun to devastate the fields of Palestine. By his Intercessory Prayers,
soldiers were Saved from death, and he also Saved those who almost perished due
to shipwrecks and other disasters while sailing and those who were lost in the
vastness of deserts.
One day, as he gave orders to strike the Semandron (a piece of wood struck with a
mallet) so that the Brethren would gather for Prayers, he said: The Wrath of God
draws near the East... and after several days it became known that a very powerful
earthquake had destroyed the ancient city of Antioch at the very hour when he had
summoned the Monks to Prayer.
In 529, St Theodosios summoned three of his beloved Bishops to whom he revealed his
imminent Departure, and indeed, after three days he Reposed peacefully in Christ
at the age of 105, and was buried in his first Cell the isolated cave where he had
sheltered at the beginning of his Ascetic Deeds.
May his memory be Eternal, and may St Theodosios the Great Cenobiarch continue to
Intercede with our Lord and Saviour for the sake of our Eternal Salvation.
