Installingthexk3yusassimpleandopeningyour360,fixingthexk3ydeviceintoposition,applyingyour
firmwaretothesuppliedmicrosdcard,andclosingyourconsole.

Dumpingyourdvddrivekey/firmwarefiles
Beforeyoustart:Installingthexk3yiseasy.However,youneedyourDVDdriveinformation.TheDVD
driveinthe360encryptsgamedatafromtheDVDdrivebacktothe360.Theinformationisencrypted
withauniquekey.Toinstallthexk3y,youwillneedthiskeysothatthexk3ycantalktoyour360inthe
samemanorthatyourDVDdrivedoes.
Forthosewhodontknowhowtodumptheirdrivekeyorwhoarentgettingsomeoneelsetodoitfor
them,youwillneedeithertheXk3yGecko,Maximus360LizardorX360USBPro.TheMaximusteam
alsohelpedoutthexk3yteamwiththedumpingoffirmwareonthenewDVDdrivetomakethexk3y
compatiblewithmoreDVDdrives.SomenewerXboxconsolesneedtheResetGlitchHack(RGH)
performedtoobtaintheDVDkeysfromtheconsolesincetheycannotbeextractedfromtheDVDdrive.
Ifyouarenotfamiliarwiththesetools,youwillneedtoreadthetutorialsthattheirdevelopersprovide.
Thetoolsarequiteexpensiveifyouareonlygoingtoinstall1unityoumightwanttopaysomeoneto
extractyourDVDdriveinformationforyou.

Openingxbox360
Whileusingopeningtoolsarenotnecessary,theyarecheapandcansaveyoualotoftimeandeffortto
openyourconsole.

ThesuppliedmicroSDcardisroughly128mbinsize.This128mbissplitinto3differentpartitions.

inanonlinuxmachine.Ifyouwanttoupdatethesefilesthereisnoneedtoseethispartition,youcan
updateyourxk3yviaaUSB,andthexk3ywillcopythesefilesontothispartitionforyou.

TotransferfilestoyourmicroSdcardyoucanuseeitheraUSBmicroSdcardreader,anSDcard

Slim360firmwareconfiguration

Toconfigureyourxk3yonaslim360,allyouneedtodoisdropyourdummy.binfileontherootofyour
microSDcard.Pleaseensureyousafelyremoveyour
MaximusLizardusers:Thefilethatismadebythelizardiscalledsource_dummy.binAllyou
needtodoisrenamethistodummy.bin
USBPro/JungleFlasherusers:Thefilethatiscreatedisalreadycalleddummy.bin.However,
therearesomesmalldifferencesbetweensomeDVDdrivesthathavethesamefirmware.For
examplethereareupto7orsovariationsofthe0225slimDVDdrive.Unfortunatelythexk3yis
unabletoautomaticallyconfigureitselfbasedonsmallbitsofmissinginformationfromJungle
Flasherdumps.Themissinginformationisnotenoughtocausee64errors(noDVDorwrong
DVDdrivedetected)butitcancause360gamestonotload...orloadsometimesandnot
others.ThefixistoaltertheALTSLIMFWparameteronafilecalledxkey.cfg.Thiscanbedone
afterinstallationiscompleteviaUSB.Moredetailsarebelowinthexkey.cfgsection
PleasenotethatthefirstDVDdrivethatwasinthe360(HardwareLiteonDG16D4S,Firmware9504)
wasupdatedinmid2011withaMicrosoftfirmwareupdate.TheFirmwarechangesfrom9504to0272.
Itisimportantthatyoudumpthefirmwareafterthisupdate.Ifyouhaveanolddumpofyourfirmware
(i.e.9504)andyouusethistoconfigureyourxk3y,newerXGD3gameswillnotworkonyoursytem.

Phat360firmwareconfiguration

Configuringthexk3yonyourPhatconsoleisalittlebitmoretechnical.Insteadofapartialdumpofthe
driveneeded(likeslim360s)afullOFW(originalfirmware)dumpisneeded.Ifyouonlyhave,orare
onlyabletomakeapartialdumpofyourfirmware,ORifyouhaveCFW(customfirmware)onyour
driveyoucanjustconvertthedumpintotheformatthatthexk3yaccepts.
Thefileneedstobecalledfirmware.bin
Youcannotsimplyrenamethefileyouhavetofirmware.bin,asmentioneditMUSTbeafulloriginal
firmwaredump,andontopofthatitmustbeaftertheMid2011updatefromMicrosoft.Ifnotyouwillget
ane64error.

Toconvertyourdumpintothecorrectformatyouwillneedtodownloadthefilebelow,whichisa
programcalledJungleFlasher.Includedintheprograminthefirmwarefolderaretheappropriate
firmwarefilesneededforallphat360s.

JungleFlasherisapowerfullittleprogramthathasa270pagemanual.Howeverforthepurposeofthe
xk3yweonlyneedtoknowhowtouse1feature.
1.OpenupJungleFlasher.exe.Youmayreceiveanerrorwhenopeningona64bitPC.Justignoreit.
2.OntheFirmwareTool32tab,clickonOpenSourcefirmwarebutton

3.Navigatetoyourfirmwarefile.Itshouldbe256KBinsize.Fordemonstrationpurposeswewillbe
usingafileforaliteondrive.

4.Afterithasbeenopenedyourinformationwillappearininthetoppanel.Thenextstepistoopenup
afulloriginaldump,thetargetfirmware.ThisisthefileyouwanttoconvertyourDVDdumpinto.The
filesarelocatedinafoldercalledfirmwarewhichislocatedintheJungleFlasherfolder.Insidethis
folderthereisafoldercalledStockFirmware.Insidethisfolderthereare4folders

Samsung.
Thesearethe4differentcompaniesthatmadeDVDdrivetypesofthePhat360.Youcanseewhat
DVDdriveyouhavebylookingatthetextunderVendoronthetabyouarecurrentlyon,orbysimply
lookingatthelargestickerthatisonyourDVDdrive.IfyourdriveisBenQ,thenyoumustchooseBenQ,
ifyourdriveisSamsungyoumustchooseSamsung,ifyourdriveisLiteonyoumustchooseLiteonand
ifyourdriveisHitachi,youmustuseoneoftheHitachifiles(thereare15differenttypes!).Theoriginal
fileyouareopeningislocatedintherespectivefolder,andthenusuallyinsidethePost_13141folder.
5.Onceyouhaveopenedthefile,yourscreenshouldlooksimilartothis.WithyourDVDdrive
informationupthetop,andanoriginaldumpdownthebottom.AllyouneedtodonowispressSpoof
toTarget.ThiswillcopyallofyourDVDdriveinformationintofullfirmwaredumpwhichiswhatthexk3y
needstowork.OnceyouclickthebuttonyouwillseetheDVDKeychangefromFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
intoyourDVDKey.

6.ThelaststepistoclickSavetoFile.Savethefileunderthenamefirmware.bin
thenamemustbeinlowercase.SaveitontoyourPCforsafekeeping,andthenyouwillneedto
transferthifileontoyourxk3yMicroSDcardonthe0.98mbFat32partition.

EnsureyousafelyejectthemicroSDcardfromyourcomputer.Failuretodosowillmostlikelycorrupt
yourmicrosdcardissomewayandcausethexk3ynottowork.

Many guides to performing the RGH are available on the internet. Boot Xell and obtain your CPU and DVD
keys. You should also a dump of your Xboxs NAND flash during the RGH process. If you do not have your

tocoverthedevice.
Oncethedeviceisproperlyinsulatedpleasemakesuretherearenoexposedmetalcomponents.Ifan
exposedcomponenttouchesupagainstthemetalshieldingonthe360caseyoucaneasilyrenderthe

noonscreenmenuontheremotetochangesettingsistoensurethatusersdontaccidentallychange

Updatingthexk3yisaseasyasdraggingafileontoaUSBstoragedeviceandinsertingitintothexk3y
screen.Thefilesneedtobeplacedontherootofthefirstpartitionoftheharddrive.Iftheyareplaced
anywhereelsethexk3ywillnotupdate.Whenthexk3yfindsfilestoupdateitwillautomaticallybeginthe
processofcopyingthefilesovertotheinternalmicroSDcard.YouwillseethemessageUpdatingPlease
Wait.Oncetheupdatehasfinished,themessagewillchangetoUpdatecompleteRestartXBOX.Donot
unplugorturnoffyourxboxbeforetheupdateiscomplete.

Thereare2modesthexk3ycanenter.EmulationmodeandPassthroughmode.
Emulationmodeisthemainmodeyouwilluse.Thismodeiswhenthexk3yison,emulatingyourDVDdrive
toplayISOfilesfromastoragedevice.Toenterthismodesimplyturnyourxboxonusingthepowerbutton
ontheconsole,orbypressingthexboxbuttononyourcontroller.

Passthroughmodedisablesthexk3yandallowsyoutouseyourDVDdriveasnormal.Toenterthismode,
turnyourxboxonbypressingtheejectbutton.Pleasenotethatonsomeslimmodelstheconsolewillnotturn
onwhentheejectbuttonispressed,evenaftermakingasoundafterpressingthebutton.Inthiscasepress

AP2.5isaspecialprotectionthatMicrosoftintroducedinlate2010.Theprotectioncheckstoseeiftheoriginal
gameisinsidetheconsoleornot.Itdoesthisbyperformingangularchecksonthephysicalmedia.
Theprotectionwasspecialsincethequestionsthatareaskedofanoriginalgamecouldeasilybechanged
withasoftwareupdate.ThesecheckswhereeasilydefeatedbyhardcodedtheresponsesintotheISOusing
aprogramcalledABGX.Thechecksallcamefromafilecalleddae.binwhichisencryptedandlocatedonthe
360NAND.
TheprotectionwassteppedupanotchonNovember17th2011whenconsolesconnectedtoxboxlive
receivedasilentupdatetothisfile(offlineuserswillalsoreceivethisupdatewhenupdatingtodashboard
version2.0.14699).Theupdatechangesthefileagain,butthistimeinsteadofeveryxboxintheworldhaving
thesamefile,everyonehasadifferentsetofquestions.Thereforehardcodingtheresponsewillnolonger

Theworkaroundwasfiguredoutbythexk3ysoftwareteamwithin36hoursandinvolvesprofilingthesediscs.
AprofileofadiscisbasicallyafilethathaseverysinglepossiblequestionthattheDVDdrivecanaskthe
disc,andeverysingleanswer.Thismeansthatiftheprofiledataexistsforagamethenthedae.binfilecanbe
updatedasmanytimesasMicrosoftwant,butitistotallypointlessasthexk3ywillalwaysreturnthecorrect
