26th / 27th December 2015

Dear Parishioners,
Today, the first Sunday after Christmas, we celebrate the
Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Whether our
families are large or small, we all belong to a family. Todays feast
reminds us that we are part of the Holy Family of Nazareth. This is
the mystery of the Incarnation. Jesus took on a human nature like
ours in order that we could be united with him. We are united not
only with Jesus and Mary, but also the family of the Holy Trinity Father, Son and Holy
Spirit.
We need to meditate on this great mystery of belonging to Gods family. This
gives our lives meaning; the sense of belonging and identity is so important we are
children of God we are able to inherit and claim all the promises made by God because
we are his children. This is what we celebrate today!!
In a few days time we will be welcoming a New Year. We have a midnight Mass to
help us celebrate. We can look back in gratitude for the past year all the good things,
the sadness, the joy and sorrows all are somehow part of Gods master plan. We can
ask Gods blessing on the New Year. It means opening a new chapter in our lives
together.
We have the directives given by Pope Francis we can celebrate a Jubilee Year of
Gods Mercy, goodness and compassion. It gives us direction in our lives; a reason to
celebrate in the midst of all the events of everyday life. There are so many sad stories
and reports that we hear and see in our media each day. In our own lives and families
there can be illness, tragedy, and so many things that could get us depressed Yet, there
are many items we can rejoice and be happy about. We always need to keep the balance
a time to rejoice and a time to be sad!
We look back in gratitude and look forward in hope! And hope is not deceptive as
St Paul says: Because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit
which has been given us.
Please note overleaf some text of Pope Francis New Year message for World Day
of Prayer for Peace, 1st January 2016. His main message challenges the indifference
which sometime arises from us feeling unable to do or say anything that will help
alleviate unjust situations. Yet the truth is that all our thoughts and actions matter, no
matter how little they may seem to be.
Fr Tom Murphy, SJ sends warm Christmas greetings from Seattle.
Again I wish you the blessings of this Holy Season.

Have a Happy New Year

Fr Joe

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY IN

POPE FRANCIS MESSAGE FOR WORLD

DAY OF PEACE: Overcome Indifference
and Win Peace:
God is not indifferent! God cares about
mankind! God does not abandon us! At the
beginning of the New Year, I would like to
share not only this profound conviction
but also my cordial good wishes for
prosperity, peace and the fulfilment of the
hopes of every man and every woman,
every family, people and nation
throughout the world, including all Heads
of State and Government and all religious
leaders. (Para 1)
Sadly, war and terrorism, accompanied by
kidnapping, ethnic or religious persecution
and the misuse of power, marked the past
year from start to finish. In many parts of
the world, these have became so common
as to constitute a real third world war
fought piecemeal. Yet some events of the
year now ending inspire me, in looking
ahead to the new year, to encourage
everyone not to lose hope in our human
ability to conquer evil and to combat
resignation and indifference. They
demonstrate our capacity to show
solidarity and to rise above self-interest,
apathy and indifference in the face of
critical situations. Here I would mention
the efforts to bring world leaders together
at COP21 in the search for new ways to
confront climate change and to protect the
earth, our common home. We can also
think of two earlier global events: the
Addis Ababa Summit for funding
sustainable development worldwide and
the adoption of the United Nations 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development,
aimed at ensuring a more dignified
standard of living for all the worlds
peoples, especially the poor, by that year.
(Para 2)
You will note that Pope Francis considers
indifference as one of the major obstacles
in our world today yet all of us are inter
dependent and all our efforts matter.
