Exam

Exam #2 (03/02/2015)
(Close book; calculator is allowed; please choose 4 problems; 25 points for each problem.)
Problem #1 What logic gate function of the ideal-diode circuit below works as? (Hint: vA, vB, and
vC are inputs while vY is output. It is one of OR, AND, NOR, NAND logic gates.) Describe briefly
how the circuit works as this type of logic gate?

[Solution]
The circuit works an AND gate with three inputs.
When one or more of the three inputs are 0 (low voltage), then one or more relevant
diodes are on, hence the output is 0 (low voltage, same as the relevant input voltage).
ONLY when all three inputs are 1, the output is 1 (high voltage, same as +5V bias
voltage).

Problem #2 In the ideal-diode circuit shown below, vI is a 10Hz, 10-V peak sine wave. Sketch the
waveform resulting at vO. What are its positive and negative peak values?

[Solution] When vI is positive, the diode is ON, then the output is shortened with the input,
hence vO=vI. When vI is negative, the diode is OFF, then the output voltage equals to the

voltage division between the two resistors, i.e.,

Problem #4 For a certain diode the forward voltage drop is 0.7 V at 1.0 mA at room temperature.
What are the values of the currents when this diode is operated at 0.6 V and 0.8 V at room
temperature? What are the voltage drops when this diode flows 0.5 mA and 2 mA currents at room
temperature? [Hint: Use diode equation I=ISexp(V/VT) with VT=25mV at room temperature.]

Problem #5 The five diodes in the circuit shown in the right figure are
identical. When the resistor R is 6.5 k, the output voltage VO is 3.5 V. In
order to get an output voltage VO of 4.0 V, what value of the resistor R need
to be chosen? [Diode equation: I=ISexp(V/VT) with VT=25mV.]
[Solution]
When the resistor R is 6.5 k, the output voltage VO is 3.5 V, hence
the current is I = (10-3.5)/6.5 = 1 mA.
When VO is 3.5 V, the voltage dropped on each diode is 0.7 V.
When VO is 4.0 V, the voltage dropped on each diode is 0.8 V.
