The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
Bring the students outside to the green fields on the playground. Tell students to look around a little bit at
the surroundings. Tell students that sometimes, there have been people that havent lived in homes like we
do today. They had to survive with what they had around them, and they didnt have stores to go to or cars
to use.
Put students in groups of three or four and give them the Outside worksheet. Explain that they need to
think about how they would survive if this was where they had to live and the surroundings were all they
had to use. Explain that they need to answer the questions on the worksheet based on what they see
around them. Give them about five to seven minutes depending on how quickly they do.
Bring students back inside and have them share what they came up with in their group.
Explain that we are going to be learning about Native Americans for a while, and that the activity they did
outside was to give them a feel for what is was like to live like Native Americans. - Because Native
Americans lived off the land.
10
Put a KWL chart on the board and pass one out to each student. Brainstorm as a class everything that they
know about Native Americans, filling in the Know part of the chart. Then as a class, brainstorm
everything that they want to know about Native Americans filling in the Wonder part. Make sure
students are filling it in as you go too.
Show some pictures of Native Americans using the PowerPoint (discussion is included in PowerPoint
notes). Talk to students about basic Native American history how they lived here before and how the
white settlers came. Explain to students that Native Americans are still around today. Not exactly the ones
in the pictures before then show pictures of Native Americans today. Say that they still live around here,
and some of them love to do things like they used to (traditions), but many times, you wouldnt be able to
know if someone was a Native American or not.
10
Closure
Ask students if any of them know if they are part Native American or not (their heritage). Tell the class
that I am 5% Native American. Can they believe that? Its because my great great great grandfather
married a Native lady. Tell them that they should go home and ask their parents if they have any Native
American in their heritage.
Put up a big class KWL chart on the Native American bulletin board (or somewhere
visible in the room). Fill in the L part of the class KWL chart with what we learned
today.
