INSTRUCTIONALMETHODS
Inordertoexpandyourcriticalthinkingandcommunicationskills,throughoutthisclassIwillaskyouto
takeonavarietyofassignments,includingbothinandoutofclasswritingassignments,reading
responses,classactivities,peerreview,narrativeandargumentativeessays,outsideresearch,andboth

individualandcollaborativeclassprojects.Alloftheseassignments,thoughsomemaybeexperimentalor
playfulinnature,aredesignedtoteachyouessentialaspectsofeffectivecommunicationandpushyour
criticalthinkingskillstonewheights.Wewillbedrawingnotonlyonthewrittenessaysofourtext,but
onvideos,music,advertisements,andmanymoreformsofvisualandoralcommunication.

COURSEDESCRIPTION
Intensivestudyofandpracticeinwritingprocesses,frominventionandresearchingtodrafting,revising
andediting,bothindividuallyandcollaboratively.Emphasisoneffectiverhetoricalchoices,including
audience,purpose,arrangement,andstyle.Focusonwritingtheacademicessayasavehicleforlearning,
communicating,andcriticalanalysis.

COURSEGOALS
Emphasizingcriticalinquiryasafoundationforeffectivewritingandcommunication,thiscoursewill
challengestudentstoexploreidentityandrhetoricalchoicesinordertogainadeeperunderstandingofthe
innerworkingsoflanguageandwriting.Throughbothformalandinformalwritingexercises,readingand
activities,studentswillbeabletopracticewithavarietyofwritingstyles,criticalperspectives,and
rhetoricalsituations.

Giventherapidevolutionofnecessaryknowledgeandskillsandtheneedtotakeintoaccountglobal,
national,state,andlocalcultures,theHigherEducationCoordinatingBoard(THECB)mandatesthatthe
corecurriculummustensurethatstudentswilldeveloptheessentialknowledgeandskillstheyneedtobe
successfulincollege,inacareer,intheircommunities,andinlife.ThroughtheTexasCoreCurriculum,
studentswillgainafoundationofknowledgeofhumanculturesandthephysicalandnaturalworld,
developprinciplesofpersonalandsocialresponsibilityforlivinginadiverseworld,andadvance
