SPM 2015 Tips: Bahasa Melayu (BM)
SPM Bahasa Malaysia is a rather difficult subject to score an A+. In fact, less than 10 students
from my school managed to secure an A+ for this subject every year. As Bahasa Malaysia is our
national language, the minimum marks to secure an A+ is rather high (usually 85 to 90),
depending on the baseline every year.
A. General guidelines
To do well in this subject, you will have to constantly improve your language skills. Try
reading articles from Malay newspaper and magazines ( I recommend Dewan Siswa by DBP).
I recommend you to attend tuition if possible because most tuition teachers will
provide extra tips and notes which will come in handy during your exams.
Before your exam, you are advised to focus more on karangan and KOMSAS.
B. Tips for karangan
You should try reading sample essays whenever you are free. This will help you to have
more ideas when writing your karangan.
Memorize some "ungkapan indah" and "peribahasa". They will be useful when you are
writing the introduction of your essays
If your entire essay has no ungkapan indahs at all, your essay might be 1 grade lower
than the original grade.
Use a variety of sentence structure. This helps to make your essay more interesting.
In this section you will be asked to summarize on 2 topics. One of them is isi tersurat
while the other is isi tersirat.Underline the relevant Isi tersurat in the passage. You should
answer in 4 paragraphs, each containing Pendahuluan, Isi Tersurat, Isi Tersirat and Penutup.
Count the total number of words and make sure that your answer is not longer than 120
words, otherwise the remaining part of your answer will not be marked, and marks may be
deducted. State the exact number of words below your essay.
Nama khas, penanda wacana, peribahasa and kata ganda are counted as one word only.
If your answer is longer than 120 words, try cancelling off the unnecessary words in your
answer and replacing longer phrase with shorter phrase of the same meaning. If it still exceeds
120 words, cancel off some of the extra Isi Tersurat or Isi Tersirat you wrote.
For all parts of Rumusan, you must answer in continuous writing form and not point
form, otherwise marks can be deducted. You should also write the answer in complete
sentences. Make sure that the grammar is correct.
D. Tips for Pemahaman Petikan Umum
When answering question on meaning of phrases, replace every word in the phrase with
another word that has the same meaning if possible. If that is not possible, you should explain
the phrase in your own sentence.
When answering questions based on the passage given, you must look for the answers
from the passage/extract. You need not use your own words and you can copy directly, but
sometimes you may have to make some changes to suit your answer
When answering questions on your own opinion (KBKK), you should give your own ideas
and do not look for the answers from the passage/extract given.Ideas given must be logical and
relevant.
E. Tips for Pemahaman KOMSAS
Make sure that the grammar is correct. If the question does not state the number of
answers you need to write, then the number of answers needed depends on the marks
allocated. Basically, one answer gives one mark,
You are advised to give extra answers
Marks will only be given for correct answers. No mark will be deducted for wrong
answers.
F. Tips for tatabahasa section
There are 5 parts in this section. When answering, you are advised to read the
questions carefully.
For the first part, you are required to construct a sentence based on the word given.
The sentence constructed must be able to show that you really understand the meaning of that
word given.
For the third and forth part, you will need to identify errors in the sentence given and
correct those errors. To score well in this section, you will have to do a lot of practices.
For the fifth section, you will be tested on peribahasa. If the question asks you to
explain the meaning of Peribahasa, your answer should be clear and detailed. If the question
asks you to make a sentence using Peribahasa, your sentence must be able to show that you
really understand the meaning of the Peribahasa. The sentence do not have to be very long. If
the question asks you to fill in the blanks using Peribahasa or state a Peribahasa based on the
situation, give the most suitable Peribahasa according to the question.
You are advised to read through all the peribahasa that are listed in your Form 1 to
Form 5 textbook
For this section, you cannot give extra answers. If you do so, marks will be deducted if
any of your extra answers is wrong.
G: Tips for novel
Answers should be in continuous form and not point form
Read your novel in the beginning of the year and not weeks before SPM
A reader asked how to score an A in SPM Bahasa Melayu at Malaysia Students Forum. Since I was
able to score a 1A in my SPM Bahasa Melayu, I have the responsibility to help other SPM
candidates to get an A in this subject too. ;-) For your information, you have to pass SPM
Bahasa Melayu to be eligible to continue your studies in form six or local university. Those who
dont pass Bahasa Melayu will sit for SPM July Paper (SPM Kertas Julai) the year after they have
had their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
Firstly, I would like to share the effective tips to score well in Paper 1 (Kertas 1) with you. For
section A (bahagian A), you will have to write an essay within 200 to 250 words based on the
material (bahan rangsangan) given. You should ensure that the length of your essay is within
the suggested length and should not exceed it though I learned from my teacher that
candidate can actually write to the maximum of 255 words.
Lihat gambar di bawah dengan teliti. Huraikan pendapat anda tentang usaha-usaha yang perlu
dilakukan untuk menangani gejala vandalisme. Panjang huraian anda hendaklah antara 200
dalam pembentukan sahsiah anak-anak and tulis rencana tentang usaha-usaha yang perlu
dilakukan oleh pihak berkenaan bagi meningkatkan mutu sukan negara.
For your information, the fifth question is always a literature-type question (soalan berbentuk
sastera). Most of the time, the question will ask the candidates to write a short stories
(cerpen) based on a theme or idiom (peribahasa) given. Choose this type of question only if you
have a sound mastery of Malay language. Generally, art stream students prefer this type of
question more than science stream students.
To increase the use of textbook in classroom, our government via Malaysian Examination
Council (Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia) has decided to limit the scope of some SPM essay
questions to the SPM syllabus since 2004. Hence you can actually spot the essay questions by
excluding the past years topics. Besides that, you can analyse the trial papers (kertas soalan
percubaan) essay questions. Here I show you a real instance where the trial question was
similar to the real SPM question. Last year, the fifth essay question (tulis cerpen berdasarkan
peribahasa bulat air kerana pembetung, bulat manusia kerana muafakat) in the real SPM
examination was identical with Terengganu second BM trial papers fifth question. Was it a
question leak (soalan bocor) or just a coincidence? There are a lot more real cases in other
subjects too!
This is the first sentence of your answer. This is the second sentence of your answer. Please
take note that you do not have to leave some space before you write your first sentence. This
is the fourth sentence of your answer.
Soalan 1: Rumusan Firstly, you should analyse the question carefully. Let say the question is
Baca petikan di bawah dengan teliti, kemudian buat satu rumusan tentangkesan-kesan
pencemaran air dan langkah mengatasinya. Panjang rumusan hendaklah tidak melebihi 120
patah perkataan.

This combination of isi tersurat and isi tersirat works well for
most of us because we can easily identify the isi tersurat in the passage. The reason I suggest
two points for isi tersirat is that you will not get any mark if the point you have written is not
included in the marking schema. You should write the isi tersirat in paragraph three. In writing
the isi tersirat, you should write your own point of view not mentioned in the passage. In this
example, you should write on usaha mengatasinya. Lastly, for the conclusion (kesimpulan), you
should always write it in this format:
Soalan 4: Novel Read and memorize the notes on the literature aspects of the novels you
have read in form four and five.
your answer, cancel out those answers with least possible. Pick the last answer left.
This could increase your percentage of getting marks by 75% !
However, if you just leave it unanswered, you wont get any marks on it.
Yeah, this is another popular question in Melaka Trial SPM paper. You might fail you
Sejarah Paper if you cant answer this.
Therefore, practise on tonnes of Sejarah Paper 1 question can get you memorize all
the question bank. Remember, diligent is needed along with the apply of SPM 2015
Sejarah Tips.
Read through the question above. You may be surprised that, the marks for facts
question stand only 4 marks. However, you have to secure 6 marks in KBAT
questions. And do you find hard in the question? I would suppose no. Just write
down any answers that is reasonable for HOTS. Most examiners are kind-heart.
you know, students can write as many answers as they could during the Sejarah
paper?
Lets say, in the image above, the question asks for Apakah kepentingan
perlembagaan kepada negara kita. Although only 2 marks are given, you can actually
write more than 3 or even 4 answers! Why should you do so? This is to secure your
marks in question you are not confident with. However, do not so in questions that
have clear answers. Or else, you would end up with insufficient time.

Sejarah subject. The study tips that I shared above are just ways to further improve
your grades in this coming SPM 2015.
