The document discusses coal tar enamel coatings used for pipeline protection and their properties and application procedures.

Loid-T11 Enamel provides long-term corrosion protection, resistance to bacteria and organisms, good electrical insulation, adhesion to metal, and flexibility among other advantages.

Loid-T11 Enamel should be heated to no more than 245°C and applied within 4 hours. It should be stored between 180-210°C and applied at a temperature 5°F or 3°C above dew point.

COAL TAR ENAMEL- LOID-11

COAL TAR BASED PIPELINE COATING

PRODUCT DATA SHEET

DESCRIPTION
Loid-T11 Enamel is a thermoplastic polymeric coating produced from plasticization of coal
tar pitch, coal and its distillates followed by addition of inert filers. Loid-11 Enamel is
produced in accordance with standards BS 4164, AWWA C203 and IS 10221.
ADVANTAGES & SALIENT FEATURES
When used together with Loid-7 Primer B/Loid-3 Primer, Glass Fibre Inner wrap and coal
tar impregnated glass fibre outer wrap LOIDWRAP it provides long-term protection to
pipelines.

Permanent corrosion protection

Resistance to soil bacteria and marine organism

Low moisture absorption

Good electrical insulation

Insolubility in hydrocarbon

Excellent adhesion to metal

Retention to form under soil pressure

Ease of application

Good flexibility and temperature susceptibility

Resistant to Cathodic disbanding

Inertness to soil chemicals

APPLICATION METHODOLOGY
Loidcoat Enamel to be the broken into small pieces of approx. 2 Kgs. And loaded into the
kettle. It is advisable to first melt the material under slow firing till half the tank capacity and
then to add new material and start agitation periodically to avoid carbonization.

Enamel to be heated and maintained at application temperature. Excessive heating to be

avoided and it is very important to have a temperature recorder fitted to the kettle all the
time which must be calibrated time to time.
The maximum temperature of the enamel should never exceed 245 oC, enamel above this
temperature should be rejected, if when tested out of specification.
Enamel held at application temperature for more than four hours should be rejected, if
when tested out of specification.
The left over material from the previous batch can be added to the fresh material at the rate
of 10% maximum per batch.
Any material recovered from the reused batch should not be reused and is to be rejected.
Enamel should not be applied to primed pipe when metal temperature is below 7 oC and the
pipe to be coated should be free from dust, dirt, oil and moisture.
For best results, application should be carried out at either 5 oF or 3oC above dew point.
Best bonding is achieved in this case.
STORAGE

To be stored in clean area to avoid contamination

For bulk liquid storage the temperature to be maintained from 180 oC-210oC

SYNTHETIC PRIMER LOID- T 7

PRODUCT DATA SHEET

DESCRIPTION
Loid T-7 is a chlorinated based synthetic primer, which is modified and adjusted with
plasticizers and stabilizer in blend of special solvents. The all season Loid-T-7 is designed
to dry faster under all temperature conditions. Its quick drying characteristic develop a bond
with Loid-T-11 under most difficult field conditions and permit pipe sections to be hot coat
and wrapped eliminating primer contamination.
Loid-T-7 Conforms to AWWA C-203/1997

- ADVANTAGES

It is all season primer and designed to dry faster under all temperature conditions.

Its free flowing property permit coverage of 10-12 m2 per Liter on new pipe surface
while old and rough pipe require 10% to 20% extra coverage depending upon pipe
surface.

It can be used for internal coating of pipes as it has not taste or odour.

APPLICATION METHODOLOGY
PIPE SURFACE PREPARATION
Before applying Loid-T-7 pipe surface preparation is of the utmost importance. There are a
number of suitable methods of pipe cleaning including:
(a)

Sand or grit blasting.

(b)

Mechanical scraping and wire brushing.

Each method has its own attractions.

Method (a) is the most full proof and medium / fine grit gives best results. Sand creates a
dust hazard and shot is susceptible to oil contamination and can cause deep impingement
on the steel surface which leads to a low primer coverage rate. An enclosed recalculating
blasting cabinet gives best results as it eliminates contamination and is easy to control.
Method (b) is used on line travel for over the ditch coating, but is not as reliable as
method (a). Any dust remaining on the pipe must be blown off with compressed air.
It should be clearly understood that before any mechanical cleaning operation takes place
all oil and grease should be removed from the pipe surface using a suitable solvent.
PRIMER APPLICATION
The prime pipe should have a uniform film of primer, free from runs, drips or missed spots.
It is most important that the steel surface of the pipe should be above the dew point before
application of any protective coatings. If any doubt exists regarding this, the pipe should be
warmed, e.g. by means of hot air blown through the pipe to warm it to a temperature of
30oC 40oC. Synthetic Primer should not be applied when the temperature of the pipe
surface is above 60oC. The use of fast drying synthetic primer eliminates the need to coat
the primed pipe within a specified period of time.
PACKAGE AND STORAGE
Available in standard 20 litres and 200 litres M.S. Drums. Special packaging available on
customers request. Loid-T-7 is to be stored in sealed container in cool place to avoid
evaporation.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Smoking welding and flash to be avoided in application area.

Use solvent proof gloves and rubber boots, eye protection glasses during
application.

In event of contact, wash eyes with cold water and seek medical advice.
