Hungary
Hungary is a country situated in the Carpathian Basin in Central Europe. The capital city is
Budapest. The country is a member of the European Union, the NATO and the Schengen
Area. The area of Hungary is 93 000 square kilometres. The population of Hungary is about
10 million.
Hungary is a democratic republic where members of the parliament are elected every four
years. The Prime Minister serves as the head of government and the President of the Republic
serves as the head of state.
99% of the people living in Hungary speak Hungarian as a first language. Hungarian is a
Uralic language distantly related to Finnish and Estonian. English and German are the most
widely spoken foreign (second) languages.
First of all, the most popular tourist destination in Hungary is definitely the capital, Budapest.
There are a lot of tourist attractions what you can see in Budapest. For example the Gellrt
Hill, Matthias Church, Fishermens Bastion, Royal Castle, Heroes Square, Vajdahunyad
Castle. Margaret Island is also a very popular place in Hungary. As for its museums the
Museum of Fine Arts, the Hungarian National Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and
also the House of Terror is a very popular place in Budapest.
The second place visited by thousands of tourists every year is Lake Balaton. There are a lot
of music festival here, which draws foreign people to our country. For example Balaton
Sound or Strand Festival.
Hungary is world famous about its thermal baths. We have thousands of it in the country. The
most famous one is on Hvz. This is the largest medicinal bath in the world. Even in the
Roman times this are called Aquincum which means city of waters.
Hungarian folk art is world famous. The Embroidery of Kalocsa and Maty are extremely
popular and a lot of foreigners buy embroidered things for presents. A lot of villages in
Hungary have kept the traditions and held a lot of events concerning folk art. A few years ago
there was an organization where young designers could recreate the traditional Hungarian
clothes. They kept the main concept of the dresses yet they added modern pieces to them.
We can be very proud of our cuisine. Hungary has a characteristic cuisine with dishes based
on meats, seasonal vegetables and fruits, dairy products and spices, such as pepper and
paprika. I think Hungarian cuisine has a good reputation and the foreigners who come here
find our dishes very tasty. Hungarian Goulash, for example, is world famous. We take great
pride in our fish dishes also. jhzi chicken soup is also very common. Paprika chicken with
sour cream, stew and stuffed cabbage are traditional Hungarian dishes, as well. Most of the
people consider Hungarian cuisine fatty and not healthy but in my opinion it is depends on the
making. We can make a stew with a lot of fat and from pork or we can make it from chicken
and without a lot of fat. Our cuisine is also contains a lot of vegetables which is really healthy.
Hungary has a lot of people to be proud of. For instance we have a lot of Hungarian investors
who changed the world. Lszl Br invented the ballpoint pen which we use on daily basis.
Jnos Neumann was the inventor of the computer. Jzsef Galamb was the designer of the
world famous Ford Model T. Not to mention Albert Szent-Gyrgyi who discovered the
Vitamin C. He also won the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
