onApril15,1912,theBritishoceanlinerTitanic
sinksintotheNorthAtlanticOceanabout400milessouthof
Newfoundland,Canada.Themassiveship,whichcarried2,200
passengersandcrew,hadstruckanicebergtwoandhalfhours
before.
OnApril10,theRMSTitanic,oneofthelargestandmost
luxuriousoceanlinerseverbuilt,departedSouthampton,
England,onitsmaidenvoyageacrosstheAtlanticOcean.The
TitanicwasdesignedbytheIrishshipbuilderWilliamPirrieand
builtinBelfast,andwasthoughttobetheworldsfastestship.It
spanned883feetfromsterntobow,anditshullwasdividedinto
16compartmentsthatwerepresumedtobewatertight.Because
fourofthesecompartmentscouldbefloodedwithoutcausinga
criticallossofbuoyancy,theTitanicwasconsideredunsinkable.
Whileleavingport,theshipcamewithinacoupleoffeetofthe
steamerNewYorkbutpassedsafelyby,causingageneralsigh
ofrelieffromthepassengersmassedontheTitanicsdecks.On
itsfirstjourneyacrossthehighlycompetitiveAtlanticferry
route,theshipcarriedsome2,200passengersandcrew.
AfterstoppingatCherbourg,France,andQueenstown,Ireland,
topickupsomefinalpassengers,themassivevesselsetoutat
fullspeedforNewYorkCity.However,justbeforemidnighton
April14,theRMSTitanicfailedtodivertitscoursefroman
icebergandrupturedatleastfiveofitshullcompartments.
Thesecompartmentsfilledwithwaterandpulleddownthebow
oftheship.BecausetheTitanicscompartmentswerenot
cappedatthetop,waterfromtherupturedcompartmentsfilled
eachsucceedingcompartment,causingthebowtosinkandthe
sterntoberaiseduptoanalmostverticalpositionabovethe

water.ThentheTitanicbrokeinhalf,and,atabout2:20a.m.on
April15,sternandbowsanktotheoceanfloor.
Becauseofashortageoflifeboatsandthelackofsatisfactory
emergencyprocedures,morethan1,500peoplewentdownin
thesinkingshiporfrozetodeathintheicyNorthAtlantic
waters.Mostofthe700orsosurvivorswerewomenand
children.AnumberofnotableAmericanandBritishcitizens
diedinthetragedy,includingthenotedBritishjournalist
WilliamThomasSteadandheirstotheStraus,Astor,and
Guggenheimfortunes.
Onehourand20minutesafterTitanicwentdown,theCunard
linerCarpathiaarrived.Thesurvivorsinthelifeboatswere
broughtaboard,andahandfulofotherswerepulledoutofthe
water.ItwaslaterdiscoveredthattheLeylandlinerCalifornian
hadbeenlessthan20milesawayatthetimeoftheaccidentbut
hadfailedtoheartheTitanicsdistresssignalsbecauseitsradio
operatorwasoffduty.
Announcementofdetailsofthetragedyledtooutrageonboth
sidesoftheAtlantic.Inthedisastersaftermath,thefirst
InternationalConventionforSafetyofLifeatSeawasheldin
1913.Ruleswereadoptedrequiringthateveryshiphavelifeboat
spaceforeachpersononboard,andthatlifeboatdrillsbeheld.
AnInternationalIcePatrolwasestablishedtomonitoricebergs
intheNorthAtlanticshippinglanes.Itwasalsorequiredthat
shipsmaintaina24hourradiowatch.
OnSeptember1,1985,ajointU.S.Frenchexpeditionlocated
thewreckoftheTitaniclyingontheoceanflooratadepthof
about13,000feet.Theshipwasexploredbymannedand

unmannedsubmersibles,whichshednewlightonthedetailsof
itssinking.
