Experiencing the Teaching-Learning

Process
EPISODE 1

LOOKING THROUGH THE MEANINGFUL LEARNING

EXPERIENCES
OBSERVATION SHEET
1. What principles in teaching-learning were commonly applied?
Learning is meaningful when it is connected to the students
life that is the principle Mrs. Guerrero always apply when shes teaching
her class. She always relate the scenario of the story to the students real
experience by using questions that awake the interest of her students.
Also the principle Good teaching goes beyond recall of
information that she makes sure that there is a recall or review of the
previous lessons she teaches and make an evaluation to know if they
applied it and not just memorized.
2. What instructional materials were used?
Instructional materials enhance the effectiveness of teaching
strategy though in the class I have been observing Mrs. Guerrero do not
use it to the fullest. She only uses the textbook and herself as an
instructional aid though if she used some pictures or visuals it would
compliment her teaching. Also the retention of learning is more powerful if
the more senses used on the teaching-learning situation.
3. What Do You Think Is The Importance Of Using Varied:
A. Methods and strategies
b. Instructional materials
c. Assessment tools
A. Methods and Strategies
a. Appropriateness- Not all the methods and strategies fits all
the lessons youll be delivering to. So if you have various
methods and strategies you could use appropriate methods and
strategies that would make the most out of the lesson.
b. Flexibility of the teacher- If the teacher would use different
methods and strategies his mastery would increase and
innovations are very possible on the lesson proper.

Experiencing the Teaching-Learning

Process
c. Enhances the teaching and learning situation- if you would
use varied methods and strategies the teaching would be alive
to avoid boredom. The students interest on the lessons and the
retention is more powerful.
B. Instructional Material
a. Appropriateness-though you could use all instructional
materials with the lessons that youll teach and if you would use
varieties of it, there would be more efficient and effective use.
b. Flexibility of the teacher-the teachers creativity would be
stirred up and the zealousness on teaching would increase. Also
he or she would use her imagination to use different
instructional material.
c. Enhances the learning situation-the students would not be
bored because the instructional materials used are varied and it
would keep the students interest. They would respond to the
needs of those who receive information in different ways.
C. Assessment Tools
a. Appropriateness- The teacher made test or the paper-andpencil test is not appropriate to all as an evaluation tool though
this is the most familiar. For example, the subjects Physical
Education and Computer it would be more appropriate to use
practical test as an evaluation tool.
b. Enhances the learning situation-the teacher must consider
the learners learning styles and multiple intelligence. To cite an
example, in Physical education the written examination would
not be enough and a practical examination would be the best for
it.
c. Flexibility of the teacher- The teacher would use his or her
wisdom on what is the right assessment tool to use.
REFLECTION
The ability to learn is the most significant activity of man
The importance of having methods and strategies, instructional
materials and assessment tools on teaching and learning plays a vital
role. The methods and strategies is the one responsible for the

retention of learning of the child. The instructional aid compliments
the method and strategy and lastly the assessment tool is the one
that evaluates if there is real learning that took place.
TEACHING METHODS AND STRATEGIES
A. A non-threatening atmosphere enhances learning
As I entered the classroom it was very tidy, well-ventilated, in order
having proper lighting. Though the room is not elegant like the other
classrooms but she made sure that her classroom is conducive for
learning.
B. Emotion has the power to increase retention and learning
When I was at the back listening to the story of Mrs. Guerrero I do
feel the story. She isnt just reading in a monotonous voice but with a
powerful and lively.
C. Good teaching goes beyond recall of information
Before the class started Mrs. Guerrero always recalled or reviewed the
previous lesson
on Language before proceeding to the next
lesson on Reading. Then when the lesson proper is finished she made an
assessment of it by using activities and written examination.
D. Learning is meaningful when it is connected to students
everyday life.
On her story telling she related the story from the personal experiences
of students by asking them if they have gone to that place, has done
the same thing like the character of the story did and etc. So the
students were enthusiastic in learning by answering the teachers
questions.
E. An integrated teaching approach is far more effective that
teaching is isolated bits of information
The teacher gave her students different activities to enhance their
abilities, to stir up their talents and intelligence on the concept of
Multiple Intelligence by using drills and groupings etc.
F. Mnemonic Strategies
Mrs. Guerrero do always gave questions while she was telling the story
like the WH questions and questions that answerable by Yes or No. The
students actively participated on it.
G. Writing Strategies
After the lesson she had an activity that could be found on the book
and integrated the lesson of Cause and Effect.

Experiencing the Teaching-Learning

Process
H. Learning is a process of building neural networks. This network
is formed through concrete experience, representational or
symbolic and abstract.
She uses this kind of strategy on her story telling i.e. She said to
the class Have you gone on a big body of water that is salty where the
fishes and sea creatures live? But she told me that because shes
teaching on a lower section she translated her questions in Tagalog for
the benefit of the students.
I. Arouse intellectual curiosity, the desire for knowledge
Though it was just a story telling in English (Reading) and for them not
to be bored and instead be motivated she told something like this Our
lesson would be about what is an echo so look for it you to answer my
question tomorrow. And there are still many but I do not state it here.
J. Emphasize the cultural and educational values of the subject
The story the Golden Hat For Marikudo it wasall about the hospitality
of Marikudo and as a reward the visitors gave him a hat. That Mrs.
Guerrero told her students what should they do when they have a
visitor.
K. Arouse the reasoning instinct of pupils and students
As she went along the lesson she used questions to make the students
alive and interested
L. Injects a clean Humor
The students when they were listening they were somewhat silent. To
awake her students she cracked some jokes to serve as an icebreaker
to the class.
M. Inductive Method
Mrs. Guerrero started from the little details of the story just like the
story of The Boy and the Echo for them to understand why is it
that it is the title of the story.

Maybe she

new words
that would be

Example:

Etc.
Have a
drama on
doing this.
Example:
If she would
ask a

might add
categories of

will answer
the question.
Those

I suggest the
she must not
consider
drawing as an
activity alone
but she must
add another
activity to it.
Learning is
the discovery
of the
personal
meaning and
relevance of
ideas.
Learning is
an active
process
Learning is an
experience
which occur
inside the
learner and is
activated by
the learner

Not all of
them would

because they
feel that they

the teacher
