Heneral Luna
Reflection Paper
Heneral Luna, I think, is such a bold film. I think the director's message isn't just about
showing us Antonio Luna's life, but also to knock some sense into us because we're becoming
like the Buencaminos and the Paternos of modern day Philippines. I say this because it seems
like we're still very much stuck in the colonial timesour collective sense of nationalism is
weird and sometimes misplaced: we're quick to brag about Hollywood or Western stars being
Filipinos but we're also quick to put down Filipino-made products.
Luna's line, Bayan o sarili? also continuously makes me reflect upon my actions and
motivations as a person. It's so easy to succumb to the wiles of selfishness and invidual success, I
have to admit. I think it takes a strong character to be able to see a purpose to one's existence
outside of self-fulfilment. I don't have anything against people who want to be successful on
their own, because I think hedonism is a value ingrained into our consciousness as human
beings. It's part of human nature to be selfish, I think. However, I also believe that it only takes
love for others and a strong will to overcome ourselves and see the need to be a man for others
and just ourselves.
Well, personally, that's one of the main messages that really kind of stuck with me
throughout the film, because I'm quite guilty of being selfish and focused on my own success. I
admit that I haven't looked into myself to find that love for others. But films like these, these are
the things that I think we really do need. Hey, it excited some real emotions from me, and woke
up some dormant nationalistic feelings from my heart.
We have to realize that films and other works of media, art, literature, etc. have such a big
effect and impact on our psyches as a people. We have to be critical of everything that we
consume lest we become mindless drones of the elite, the administration, and whomever seeks to
control the masses. I'm sure that to take a risk like this, to create a film that's not sensational or
romantic or comedic, to not be sure of commercial success; is something that's borne out of that
unselfish desire to create and produce something worthwhile. I salute the director, Jerrold Tarog,
for doing this film and creating something that could incite feelings of anger, nationalism, pride,
etc.
