2015 10 26 Visual Sequences

This document contains the questions and responses for an assignment to create a visual sequence. The assignment includes: 1) Drawing the first four terms of a sequence. 2) Explaining the rule to get from one term to the next using diagrams. 3) Naming the sequence. 4) Creating a table with the first five terms. 5) Identifying if the sequence is arithmetic or geometric and stating the common difference or ratio. 6) Deriving a formula for the nth term, if possible.

1. Copy an image of your sequence below. You should have four terms in your
sequence visualized.
2. State in words what the rule is that brings you from one figure to the next. You
should draw images that point to various pieces to help with your explanation!
[explanations and diagrams/images here]
3. Name your sequence. Like weve had scott n and rufus n , you can give it any name you
want! You can name it after yourself, someone else, or use any word or variable you
love!
[name of sequence!]
3. Make a table of the sequence for the first five terms.

Term
Number

1st term

2nd term

3rd term

4th term

5th term

4. Is your sequence arithmetic or geometric? If it is, what is the common difference or

common ratio. If it is not, can you explain (from your first five terms) how you are certain
it is not?
[explanation]
5. Now for the creative part. You created a sequence. Can you come up with a general
formula for the nth term recursively? Explicitly? Show your work/thinking! Your sequence
might be complicated enough that it isnt possible or is so complex and that is fine! But
sometimes there are sequences that seem deceptively hard but actually are pretty
simple to reason out. So have some fun taking a crack at this!
