INTRODUCTION
The rapidly evolving technology and media landscape is now
producing an accessible range of new media beyond print and
broadcast. New media includes a range of representations such as
games and stimulations; media rich e-books, comics and info
graphics; mobile computing and augmentedreality ; blogs, social
networks, video chat and other modes of connectivity etc. These new
media are promising to expand and challenge our notions of learning
and literacy.
These new media are also increasingly being used in educational
context that not only span formal K-16 classroom environment but
also informal learning environments. In this assignment, the role of
new medias like Google Docs, digital magazine editing, E-portfolio
in modern educational scenario is explored.
E-Portfolio
An electronic portfolio (also known as e-portfolio, digital
portfolio or online portfolio ) is a collection of electronic evidence
assembled and managed by a user, usually on the web. Such
electronic evidence may include inputted text, electronic files, images,
multimedia, blog entries and hyperlink.E-portfolios are both
demonstrations of the users abilities and platforms for self-expression
and if they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over time.
An e-portfolio can be seen as a type of learning record that
provides actual evidence of achievement. Learning records are closely
related to the Learning plan (an online document used to plan
learning, usually over an extended period of time), an emerging tool
that is being used to manage learning by individuals, teams,
organizations etc. To the extent that a Personal Learning Environment
(systems that help learners take control of and manage their own
learning) captures and displays a learning record, it also might be
understood to be an electronic portfolio.
E-portfolios, like traditional portfolios, can facilitate students
reflection on their own learning, leading to more awareness of
learning strategies and needs.
There are three main types of e-portfolio :1)Developmental e-portfolio
A developmental e-portfolio can show the advancement of skill
over a period of time rubrics. The main purpose is to provide an
avenue for communication between student and instructor.
2)Assessment e-portfolio

E-portfolio in Education
In education, e-portfolio is a collection of students work that
can advance learning by providing a way for them to organize,
archive and display work. The electronic format helps instructors to
evaluate student portfolios via Internet, CD-ROM, DVD etc.
Electronic portfolios have become popular alternative to paper based
portfolio because they provide the opportunity to review,
communicate and give feedback in an asynchronous manner. In
addition , students are able to reflect on their work, which makes the
experience of creating the e- portfolio meaningful. A student eportfolio may be shared with a prospective employer or used to record
the achievement of programme or course specific learning outcomes.
In education, e-portfolio has six major functions :
1) Document, skill and learning
2) Record and track development with a program

The Google Docs Suite also allows for offline capacity on our
computer, tablet or other mobile devices. Synching our files to our
devices make them available for offline editing and to watching
them offline.
Google Docs Sheets, Forms, slides and drawings are all integral
parts of a suite of productivity and creativity apps that require just
a web browser to create, edit and collaborate. It helps students to
work, remain productive and to build important skills they need.
Here is a list of some of the ways that teacher can use Google docs
in their classrooms:1) It can be used to promote group collaboration and creativity by
having students to record their group projects.
2) Teachers can use google docs to keep a track of grades,
attendance, or any other data using Spreadsheet.
3) Students use Google Docs to collaborate on writing
assignments.
4) Teachers can facilitate writing as a process by encouraging
students to write in real time and also by providing help and
insight to them using the comments feature.
5) They can also use spreadsheets to create quizzes and tests
online.
6) Teachers can use it to maintain, update and share lessons over
time in a single document.
7) Using spreadsheets, teachers can organize cumulative project
data in a single sheet accessible to any collaborator at any time.
8) Teachers and students can use it to gather research information,
ask for opinions etc.
Google Docs are free and very easy to use. It has a userfriendly interface. It lets users search for items by name, type
and visibility setting, preview docs or files before sharing or
opening them and also offers a chat functionality for
collaborators to use while working on docs.
CONCLUSION
People now have increasing access to new media and
tools in these different settings to develop new educational
materials and representations, communicate with others
and make sense of complex concepts. Exploring the
capabilities of new media enable to support and expand
learning and literacy, however, requires a thorough
understanding of how people construct, consume and learn
with new media. Therefore it is important to know the
importance of new technological applications like eportfolios, Digital Magazine editing, Google Docs etc. in
enhancing the educational quality.
