Announces Summer Internship Contest

February 2010

Dear Educator:

I am pleased to announce that the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is offering
two summer internships and a $1000 scholarship from State Farm Insurance for college
students and graduating high school seniors, in conjunction with our observance of Asian
Pacific American Heritage Month.

This internship is part of my office’s efforts to actively attract and recruit individuals
with the hope that they will one day join our office as assistant state’s attorneys. We believe
this opportunity will provide invaluable experience to the selected students, especially if the
students are considering a career in the public sector or the legal profession.

We would like your organization to become a sponsor and nominate students for the
internship. Enclosed are detailed information and application forms for you and the students
to complete and submit by Monday, March 29, 2010. A winner will be selected and
notified by April 9, 2010 and recognized at the State’s Attorney’s Asian Pacific American
Heritage Month reception in May 2010. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Anita Alvarez
State’s Attorney

Required Essay Question
ESSAY
Applicants should address the following issue:
We live in a technology-driven society where people of all ages have cell phones with cameras and engage in
social networking over the Internet. In the United States, a recent survey found that one in five teenagers has e-
mailed or texted a suggestive photograph via cell phone. Many school age children are participating in a
dangerous activity called “sexting.” For example, a 13 year-old and her girlfriend snapped cell phone pictures of
themselves at a sleepover, dancing around with their shirts off, and then sent the nude pictures of themselves to
their boyfriends. The girls thought it was just “fun,” but now the pictures have surfaced on the boys phones when
they were confiscated at school. In other cases, the recipients of the pictures have posted them on the Internet or
sent the pictures on to others.

If a minor takes a naked or sexually provocative picture of himself or herself and sends it to a “friend,” is that a
crime in Illinois? If a recipient of such a picture forwards it on to another or posts it on the Internet, is that a
crime in Illinois?

Please research Illinois statutes for any Internet or cyber-related laws related to sexting and discuss the following
in your essay:

1. The ramifications of a criminal conviction for sexting or posting sexual pictures on the Internet.
Make sure to address the following areas:

Legal
Educational
Career
Other

3. The personal or social impact of such a criminal conviction on you? Your parents? Your
community?

4. Do you agree with the way the Illinois law treats sexting or posting such pictures on the Internet?
Why or why not?

REMINDER:

Essays must be typed and be no longer than a maximum of 1000 words.

Students should SIGN their name and include the DATE on the back of each page of the
essay.
Submit the completed application, with a copy ready picture, letter of recommendation,
high school or college transcript and essay in ONE envelope to be received no later than
5:00 p.m., Monday March 29, 2010.
