Accordion Lessons - Lesson 10: #. That Means That in The Beginning of The #) Just To The Left of The Treble Clef

This lesson introduces the key of G, which has one flat note - F#. When playing in the key of G, any F notes, regardless of position on the staff, should be played as F#. Each note has its own musical scale, and future lessons will cover the scales used to create songs. Students are advised to check for any sharp or flat symbols after the treble clef at the start of a song, as these indicate which notes on the lines or spaces of the staff should be played sharped or flatted.

ACCORDION LESSONS LESSON 10

Introduction to KEYS:
So far you have been playing in the key of C. You have not had to play
any of the Black keys. The key of C does not have any black keys known
as Sharps & Flats. This lesson introduces you to the key of G. The key
of G has one black key it is F#. That means that in the beginning of the
song you will see a sharp symbol (#) just to the left of the Treble Clef
sign. In the case of the Key of G you will see the sharp symbol appear on
the top line of the staff (F Remember the saying Every Good Boy
Does Fine; for the name of the notes on the lines of the staff). When
you see this EVERY F note no matter where it is located is an F#. That
means the first space of the staff and the top line of the staff Fs are
sharp, also every F on the keyboard is also to be played as an F#.
Every note has its own scale. The first note you learned was C that you
played with your thumb. C has its own scale as does D/E/F/G/A/B. You
will be introduced to the scales latter on in the lessons. Each scale is
created the same way.
F# is the black key between F and G. So look at a song you are learning
and see it after the Treble Clef sign there are any sharp or flat (flats you
are about to learn in the next few lessons) signs of the staff lines or
spaces. It there are then all of the notes on those lines or space are either
sharp or flat depending on what symbol follows the Treble Clef sign.
