HHS Program Description 2015
educational and career opportunities that will promote just, civil, and hopeful societies.
Hope-after-High School begins at the end of Grade 7, when learners graduate from middle school and will attend high school.
GRADE 7
MARCH
Meet with Grade 7 students to outline the program.
APRIL OCTOBER
Complete a short application that sheds light on each students background and dreams.
Email it to our Hope-after-High School (HHS) Coordinator before October 16, 2015.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER
UP checks with school officials regarding grades, attendance, character and extra-curricular participation.
School administrators and educators from two Addo primary schools suggest 10 names each for consideration.
UP selects up to 10 students to participate based on each students performance at school and the submitted
application. Students and their guardians must sign an agreement and a waiver to participate.
We will also select a waiting list in the event that those chosen do not meet the expectations outlined below.
GRADES 8, 9, and 10
EXPECTATIONS: STUDENTS MUST
communicate monthly with the HHS Coordinator via both Skype and/or email,
meet with the UP representative when he or she is in South Africa,
maintain or improve grades, attendance, character, and extracurricular participation, and
maintain the previous grade(s) standards and expectations, or risk being dismissed from the program, at which point
UP may invite students on the waiting list to participate in the program.
In return, UP and its sponsors will provide, as needed, a school uniform, a backpack, and school supplies.
GRADE 11
EXPECTATIONS: STUDENTS MUST
communicate monthly with the HHS Coordinator via both Skype and/or email, focusing on performance in school,
future plans, and progress with university research,
meet with the UP representative when he or she is in South Africa,
maintain or improve grades, attendance, character, and extracurricular participation, and
maintain the previous grade(s) standards and the expectations, or risk being dismissed from the program, at which
point UP may invite students on the waiting list to participate in the program.
In return, UP and its sponsors will provide, as needed, materials to enhance the students chances of success, as well
as both moral and some financial support for the college and university process.
GRADE 12
EXPECTATIONS: STUDENTS MUST
communicate monthly with the HHS Coordinator via both Skype and/or email, focusing on performance in school
and progress with the university and bursary application process,
meet with the UP representative when he or she is in South Africa, and
maintain or improve grades, attendance, character, and extracurricular participation, and
pass the matric!
Failure to maintain the HHS standards will result in dismissal from the program.
UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM, HHS recipients will be awarded the following at a
recognition ceremony: 1) a Hope-after-High School certificate 2) a laptop 3) all books and supplies for the first year at
university 4) some assistance with transportation. It is our hope that students will then be ready for the demands of University,
and UP will turn its attention to current Grade 7 students for their admission to the HHS.
