Subject: Guide to the OP3 Demonstration Program
This paper describes the OP3 demonstration program and how to use it and show it to win business.
Hardware:
Any S7-200 PLC
SIMATIC OP3, part number 6AV3 503 1DB10
Versions and special tips:
Procedure:
NOTES: OP3 comes with 3 cables: the ProTool download cable (has phone jack connector), the PLC-to-OP
communication cable, and a power cable (only used if external power is required). Please note that
connecting the PLC-to-OP cable will allow OP3 to be powered from the S7 PLC.
1) Locate the necessary files.
2) Check to make sure that the software you have is the same version as the version the files were created
in. Later versions of software should work fine, but are not guaranteed.
3) Once the files have been retrieved download the file to the OP using ProTool and then download the file to
the CPU using the appropriate PLC software.
4) Connect the cables and put the CPU into RUN mode.
How to show the OPs to customers:
The demonstration programs were designed to show off the best features of the operator panels. In this
market the display and the interaction of the panel to the user are paramount to purchasing decisions. The
demonstrations were made to attempt to exploit this.
All OPs are fully interactive. For instance if the OP screen says that the OP sets a bit in a PLC, to be sure,
one can go into the PLC and show the bit actually being set.

The OP3 has 2 modes that you can use. One is a non-interactive mode where the OP3 automatically scrolls
through a series of messages stating the unique advantages of the OP3. This mode is ideal for trade shows
or other activities where customer interaction is intermittent. Select the function AUTO to get into this mode.
The second operating mode is where you can walk the customer through a series of screens to show the
wide range of features available. This mode is recommended for sales presentations where a customer is
present.
This is the default mode when first powering up the OP3 demo. For the second mode, after the OP3 powers
up, hit the ENTER key on the OP3. This will take the OP3 to the Screen mode. You will have on the screen
the following options:
F1 - PB
F2 - Sym
F3 - Tmr
F4 - DAT
F5 - EXIT
A Function key is activated by pressing the SHIFT key along with the appropriate Function key.
The S7-200 PLC should be set to RUN mode regardless if OP3 is in manual or auto mode.
F1 PB
This Function key is used to show how easy it is to replace pushbuttons in a control scheme. After pressing
F1 you will see a new screen with F1 labeled Q0.0. Activating this Function key will set bit Q0.0 in the PLC as
a momentary pushbutton. The light on the PLC should light up very quickly, showing off the fast response the
OP3 has. After releasing the Function key the bit gets reset. Activating the F3 key, labeled SetMe, takes you
to another screen where settings for the OP3 can be made. For example if you want to show the OP3 in
Offline mode or if you want to put the OP3 into Transfer mode this screen is available. The MORE (F4 key)
button takes you to the Time/Date screen where these can be viewed or set. The BACK (F5 key) always
takes you back to the initial, or START, screen.
F2 SYM
This function key shows how the OP3 can display symbolic names rather than numbers for variables in the
PLC. In this demo the variable in the PLC is constantly changing. Both the numerical PLC variable is shown,
as well as the text entry that is associated with each particular value in the PLC. This concept is referred to
as a text list in ProTool. The demo shows only output fields, although the OP can also be programmed to
use input text lists. The BACK key returns you to the Home screen again.
F3 -Tmr
This Function key takes you to a simple screen where you can access a Timer in the PLC, show it, and/or
change the preset value. To change the preset simply type in the amount of time on the OP3s numeric
keypad, hit ENTER, and you will see the timer reset accordingly.
F4 DAT
This function key takes you to a screen which shows the date and time. The Date and Time are not changed
here, simply displayed.
To switch into automatic mode on the OP3 simply press the F5 AUTO function from the main menu.
