INTRODUCTION

A key initiative of the Government of India is the development of hydropower to help

meet the country’s energy needs and provide all its citizens with access to electricity by 2012.
Today, world generates about 848 GW of power of annual production. It contributes about 50%
of total power production in 50 countries as per WORLD ATLAS AND INDUSTRIAL GUIDE
2008.
Hydropower being an indigenously-available, clean and renewable source of energy, the
Government of India is keen to use the largely untapped potential in this area – currently only 23
percent of India’s hydro potential is being utilized -- to provide the additional generating
capacity it needs.
Moreover, additional hydropower capacity is desirable in India’s generation mix, as it
provides the system operator with technically vital flexibility to meet the changes in demand
which typically affect a power network like that of India. The high density of household demand
in India means that the system can experience a peaking load of anything between 20,000 to
30,000 Megawatts. This sudden spurt in demand can be best met by hydropower plants which
have the ability to start up and shut down quickly. Other sources of power cannot do this as
economically.
Hydropower is the energy that comes from the force of moving water. The movement of
water between the earth and the atmosphere is the part of the continuous cycle. The sun draws
moisture up from the oceans and rives, and the moisture condenses into clouds. The moisture is
released from the clouds as a rain or snow. The oceans and the rivers are replenished with
moisture and the cycle starts again. Gravity causes the water on the earth to move from places to
places from high ground to low ground. The force of moving water gets powerful on this
occasion and it releases its potential energy with increased quantum of force.
Hydropower electricity is the only low-carbon, controllable alternative to nuclear plants.
It makes complete sense to start building hydropower projects. This form of generating
electricity is unique and it produces constant power twenty four hours a day. It is necessary to
store water to ensure a reliable supply of electricity can be generated from water energy
whenever it is needed. Hydro-electricity is the most widely used form of renewable energy. It is
an important component of the energy grid for India. Solar energy is still meeting only a tiny
fraction of the world's energy needs yet it is the energy source that has enjoyed the greatest
growth and continues to promise tremendous potential. Wave energy is still in its infancy with
most hydropower projects still in the experimental or demonstration phases with
numerous hydropower projects still trying to prove that the world's oceans can provide us with
another sustainable source of power.

OBJECTIVES

 To learn the application of modern equipments in hydropower projects.

 To be getting familiar with modern equipments in construction industry.
 It will help in introducing the modern techniques in hydropower projects.
 To know better utilization of resources and equipments with better planning techniques.

BACKGROUND

Few years before India had not started use of equipments and planning tools
growth in construction of hydropower was insufficient. There are few reasons for that they are as
follows:
 Lack of automated control system
 Less feasibility and planning
 Poor technology in mining & tunneling
 Poor application of methods and specifications of codes.
 Non-availability of skilled labors

SCOPE OF PROJECT
Planning plays a key role in construction. It is the preconstruction activity by that
saving in time & cost and milestones of the project is formed as it provides a way to execute a
project. Hydropower projects are very complex in nature. The most used planning techniques in
construction of hydropower are LOB. Hydropower projects are generally repetitive in nature.
They need some limited equipments for massive work. Consequent use of equipment is must at
different places of execution.
 Proper planning will help in optimum utilization of the equipments.
 Planning is the key tool that is drawing outline of the work.
 Hydropower projects are the complex projects that cannot be implemented without
investigation otherwise it will be loss of money.
 Proper planning leads to the maximum utilization of material.
 It reduces the labor cost and variable cost.
 It helps in monitoring and controlling the progress of the project.
 It will be better in inventory management and control.

There is vast area of application of different types of modern equipment. There is use of
equipment in the various activities such as:
 Transportation of material
 Concreting,
 Mining
 Excavation and hauling
 Loading and unloading
 Clearing of site
 Crushing
 Rolling and compacting
 Paving and curbing
 Sprinkling
 Batching and mixing of concrete
 Drilling
 Gravel spreader
 Sweeper
 Grader
 Geo-composites
 Automated control and safety system(SCADA)
 Power house
 Canal paver

METHODOLOGY

The thesis discovers the topics as introduction, history, planning & scheduling
technique, its application & way of implementation, all equipments with their application at site
and their scope of use in India, case study, etc.
The thesis will be prepared by using the print media, electronic media and personal
observation. There is lot of books, journals, magazines to be referred. We can access to the e-
books, journals, reports, surveys, corresponds to company employees through the electronic
media. Other way of personal observation is access to site where road construction is going on.
We can also consulting our faculty members.

CONCLUSION:
 Hydropower sector is most aggressively growing but extremely unevenly.
 Use of planning tools like MSP, Primavera will help in smooth implementation and
timely achieving project completion
 Need for advanced automated control and safety systems for handling and water
distribution
 Modern construction industry is keen to adopt all new equipments in India
 Need the support of Govt. for importing the new technologies and machines duty free.
 More research should be carried out in planning and machine development.
 While award of contract contractor should have sufficient equipments of specified
qualification.
