Dear Parishioners,
In our first reading today, we see Joshua is resentful of the fact that the gift of
prophecy is given to others but Moses rejoices in the fact. St James does not condemn
wealth, but the unjust way it is accumulated. St Marks gospel reminds us of Christian
tolerance us warns us to avoid scandal and occasions of sin.
We are told of the institution of seventy elders who assist Moses in ruling the
people of Israel. Jealousy takes over when two people. Eldad and Medad began to
preach Gods word even though they were not at the particular ceremony of selection.
They are not one of us!
This same problem arises in the gospel. The apostles are very annoyed when
someone, not one of us casts out demons. It goes deeper, because we see in the earlier
part of the gospel that the apostles were unable to cast out a certain demon. There is a
question of sour grapes here. The reported the incident to Jesus, certain that he
would condemn the outsider but NO Anyone who is not against us is for us,
Jesus says.
Have things changes? No, we can be so protective of our little patch; our little
world. We hear the saying: God works in mysterious ways! We must not limit Gods
goodness to those who profess belief in him or whom we consider one of us. People
of all kinds, are also instruments of Gods goodness, mercy and holiness. Who are we to
limit or restrict Gods master plan? This demands deep reflection.
SIGNING SCHOOL FORMS: Can we put the signing of school forms on hold for
another 10 days, please! There is a new system put in place by the Diocesan/Bishops
Conference Education Department. As I see it at present, it leaves a lot to be desired in
order to work from the priest point of view. There is a meeting next week to deal with
any questions and give explanations. We will take it from there. I should be in a
position to set times for parents to come along.
ANNUAL JUSTICE AND PEACE DAY: On Saturday 17th October, we host the
Westminster Annual Justice and Peace Day here at St John Vianney. In the light of Pope
Francis document Laudato Si and the forthcoming Paris Convent on Climate Change.
We have invited Fr Sean McDonagh to be our keynote speaker. There will be input from
other guest speakers too to help us understand the current crisis facing us as a
humanity concerned with caring for our common home, as Pope Francis puts it. I
would hope that many parishioners would avail of this study day on our own doorstep!
Please sign up for it, as this helps in our planning arrangements.
Thats all for this week, God bless.
Fr Joe
