Alumni Reunion
The alumni gathering of Saint Philip Neri School last Sunday was a delightful meeting of friends, whose friendships
have stood the test of time. It was a great tribute to Catholic educations ability to forge life-long communal bonds,
and to the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary who gave so much of themselves. Katie Hearn, SNJM and
Mary Ryan, SNJM were there, sharing stories of how the Holy Names sisters educated the youth of the archdiocese of
Portland.
I was thinking of my own 50th anniversary of graduation from Our Lady of the Lake School, also taught by Holy
Names Sisters, which I will celebrate next year. One of my fellow classmates and I have been talking about staging
a 50th anniversary gathering, and I was taking notes about how to make it a success.
Hebrews
Jesus is our High Priest, which means that he is the go-between. He stands in the gap between the human
community and God. He speaks to God on behalf of the congregation (the human community). He speaks to the
congregation on behalf of God.
Reaching Out
This often happens in a natural way. I have gone twice to Night Strike under the west end of the Burnside
Bridge. Every Thursday night homeless people come for services. Volunteers (50 or more) come to offer services:
footwashing, haircutting, shaving, distributing clean and dry clothing, serving dinner, giving out popcorn and pet
food, and providing a port a poti. In conjunction with these services offered by the Christian group Bridgetowninc.org
who are hosted by the Liberation Street Church on SW 2nd and Burnside, there is medical team and a dental
team. The volunteers are instructed to start up conversations and to build relationships with the
homeless. Especially if you come often you can get to know the regulars. I am impressed with the positive tone
established under the bridge.
The Priesthood of the Baptized
Last week we heard Jesus looked on him (the rich young man) with love. The Night Strike volunteers might be
priests like Jesus: they stand in the midst of the homeless and raise their eyes to God. They stand in Gods presence
and turn their eyes of love towards the homeless.
