welcoming to all, we, the community of St. Philip Neri, strive to
reach out, to reconcile and to promote unity for all Gods
creations through worship, education, and service toward the
common good.

SECOND COLLECTION

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Your prayers and generous support offered to the

Society for the Propagation of the Faith on World Mission
Sunday directly benefit the mission church and help
deepen your relationship with Jesus by helping so many
missionaries around the world. Please be generous in
your support.

Thank you to the volunteers who have come forward to

help out while Rose is out of the office for hand surgery.
We are still looking for volunteers to help out during the
recovery time & for future coverage. Our goal is to have
a pool of volunteers to help out. No experience needed
just a pleasant smile and welcoming personality. Please
contact Rose 503-231-4955 or
[email protected].

COSTUME COLLECTION
Adrienne Jarvis continues to collect costumes for the
Chelsea Hicks Foundation. The costumes are made
available to children in Doernbecher and Randalls
Childrens Hospitals. Please bring in new, never worn
costumes and dress up accessories to help bring joy into
lives centered around medical procedures. Collections
continue each weekend of October.

DOMESTIC ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH

The Altar Society takes up a collection each October to
highlight awareness of domestic abuse and to support

A Word from Servant of God Isaac Hecker,

Founder of the Paulist Fathers
The neglect of the natural sciences is a sign of the decay of religion, for the
Lord is a God of all knowledge (1 Kings 2:3). Indifference and contempt for
the natural sciences spring not from the spirit but from the absence of the spirit
of true religion, and betray a mind lacking in a proper appreciation of the
existence of God and His glory in all His works [On the Mission of New
Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP,
at 202-269-2519 and tell him your story.

REMEMBERING OUR FAITHFUL DEPARTED

Once again during the month of November, we encourage you to bring
photos of your loved ones who have died. Bring them in and place them on
the Marian & side altars. Please identify your photos so people know who
you are remembering and put your name on the back so we can make sure
they are returned to you.

ESCRIP BUY COSTUMES ONLINE

Buy your Halloween costumes through the eScrip Online Mall Costume
Discounters and they will give us 12% back. Their prices are slightly less
than other Halloween stores. This is a great way to support the costume
collection for Chelseas closet & St. Philip Neri both!!

ALTAR SOCIETY - CIVIL WAR SMACKDOWN!

Celebrate in style with your own personal Duck or Beaver basket. Starting
Oct. 31 tickets will be sold after both Masses through Nov. 22. Show us your
true colors:

Drawing will be held Nov. 22, just in time for the big game.

Pastoral Corner
Alumni Reunion
The alumni gathering of Saint Philip Neri School last Sunday was a delightful meeting of friends, whose friendships
have stood the test of time. It was a great tribute to Catholic educations ability to forge life-long communal bonds,
and to the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary who gave so much of themselves. Katie Hearn, SNJM and
Mary Ryan, SNJM were there, sharing stories of how the Holy Names sisters educated the youth of the archdiocese of
Portland.
I was thinking of my own 50th anniversary of graduation from Our Lady of the Lake School, also taught by Holy
Names Sisters, which I will celebrate next year. One of my fellow classmates and I have been talking about staging
a 50th anniversary gathering, and I was taking notes about how to make it a success.
Hebrews
Jesus is our High Priest, which means that he is the go-between. He stands in the gap between the human
community and God. He speaks to God on behalf of the congregation (the human community). He speaks to the
congregation on behalf of God.
Reaching Out
This often happens in a natural way. I have gone twice to Night Strike under the west end of the Burnside
Bridge. Every Thursday night homeless people come for services. Volunteers (50 or more) come to offer services:
footwashing, haircutting, shaving, distributing clean and dry clothing, serving dinner, giving out popcorn and pet
food, and providing a port a poti. In conjunction with these services offered by the Christian group Bridgetowninc.org
who are hosted by the Liberation Street Church on SW 2nd and Burnside, there is medical team and a dental
team. The volunteers are instructed to start up conversations and to build relationships with the
homeless. Especially if you come often you can get to know the regulars. I am impressed with the positive tone
established under the bridge.
The Priesthood of the Baptized
Last week we heard Jesus looked on him (the rich young man) with love. The Night Strike volunteers might be
priests like Jesus: they stand in the midst of the homeless and raise their eyes to God. They stand in Gods presence
and turn their eyes of love towards the homeless.
Fr. Bill Edens
